I don’t know what it is about autumn, but it’s hands down my favorite time of year to plan a trip. Probably because it’s my favorite season in general. The air turns that perfect crisp-cool, the summer crowds finally take a break, and everywhere you look, the leaves are putting on a show with the most stunning colors. Some of my absolute favorite trips have been taken during the fall, like my most recent autumn escapes to New York City in 2024, Paris and Amsterdam in 2023, and Hocking Hills in 2021. Whether I’m chasing peaceful hikes through golden forests, sipping coffee in cozy cafés, or soaking up the festive vibes of harvest events, fall just hits different. It’s the perfect mix of energy and chill, and the best excuse to slow down, enjoy the moment, and explore somewhere new.

Honestly, fall is the best season to get out there and travel. The weather is cooler but still comfortable, and prices usually drop, which is a win-win. Plus, this time of year just makes everything look and feel better, from crisp East Coast mornings to those dreamy golden mountain views. Whether you’re all about chasing peak foliage, planning a romantic weekend away, or just craving some fresh air and outdoor fun, there are so many incredible places to visit right now.

The U.S. seriously knows how to do fall right. Places like Acadia National Park light up with jaw-dropping color, and the Blue Ridge Parkway offers drives that will have your camera working overtime. Whether you want a classic road trip, a harvest festival fix, or just a nature retreat to breathe it all in, these spots are top-tier fall destinations. Get ready to start planning your ultimate autumn adventure!
New York City
New York City in the fall is truly so magical. As the trees turn vibrant shades of amber and crimson (because yes, they have trees there) the city comes alive with endless ways to soak up the season. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through Central Park (which is incredible in the fall), grabbing drinks at a rooftop bar with stunning skyline views, or checking out seasonal events and outdoor markets, fall in NYC is seriously something special. Plus, it’s a great time to hit up museums and attractions without the usual crowds.
Honestly, there’s a reason we planned our first big New York City trip for October! The weather was just perfect (cooler but not cold) and the leaves were just starting to change. It made the whole experience feel cozy and unforgettable.

Asheville, North Carolina
Tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is your go-to for a laid-back yet lively fall trip. We took a road trip to this area with our dogs and had the absolute best time! From the vibrant art scene to winding hiking trails, there’s truly something for everyone here.
Be sure to take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is one of the best scenic drives in the U.S., especially when the fall colors are at their peak.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
One of the most visited national parks in the country, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a top spot for spectacular autumn views. The forests burst with color, and you’ll find dozens of hiking trails suitable for all levels. Beyond that, the temperatures are perfectly warm during the day, yet get a little chillier at night. In other words, you can enjoy apple picking during the day and cozy bonfires at night. It’s the perfect place for leaf-peeping, photography, and simply connecting with nature. We love to take our dogs and end up having such a relaxing trip every time. If you want a cozy fall getaway, renting a cabin nearby is the perfect choice!

Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is pure fall perfection with its slow pace and historic charm. We visited during November for a wedding and ended up making a long weekend of it, which was so perfect because otherwise we wouldn’t have thought to visit during the fall. The cooler temps and smaller crowds make it the perfect time of year to wander moss-draped oak-lined streets or enjoy a meal by the waterfront. Fall here means ghost tours, art festivals, and harvest-themed markets popping up everywhere. There’s a little spooky, a little festive, and a whole lot of Southern charm.

Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas might not be your typical fall foliage destination, but it definitely becomes more enjoyable when the temps cool down. Take it from someone who has visited in the summer when it was 105 degrees, go in the fall! Take advantage of the milder weather to explore Red Rock Canyon, make a day trip to the Grand Canyon, or enjoy all the dining and entertainment on the Strip without the scorching summer heat.

Where to Travel in Europe in the Fall
Fall in Europe is seriously one of my favorite travel seasons. The golden light feels like it was made for picture-perfect moments, the crowds have thinned out, and everything just slows down enough to soak it all in. I have definitely made it a priority to travel here during autumn because the vibe is unbeatable. Plus, I’ve scored some amazing flight deals by going during off-peak seasons! Like, $480 round-trip to Paris kind of deals.
Whether I’m wandering cobblestone streets, sipping coffee in a cozy café, or exploring grand palaces and sprawling parks, fall brings a romantic and peaceful energy that makes every trip feel extra special. Here are some of the best cities to visit in Europe during the fall:
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam in the fall is truly something special! It’s the time of year I always pictured there before visiting myself. The air turns crisp, the summer crowds ease up, and the city takes on a calm, peaceful vibe. Trees lining the canals shift to gorgeous shades of orange and gold, making it a perfect backdrop for biking or slow walks. Cozy cafés and world-class museums feel way more inviting without the busy summer rush. The weather is cool but not too cold, perfect for exploring outdoor markets and parks.
We visited in November and it was honestly just right. I loved ducking into warm pubs to cozy up, and even managed to enjoy a canal cruise surrounded by all those beautiful fall colors.

Paris, France
Paris in the fall is extra romantic (as if it wasn’t already) with its tree-lined boulevards turning warm shades of yellow and red. We snagged a great deal on flights from the U.S. in November ($490 round-trip!), and hotel prices were surprisingly reasonable too. The cooler temps make strolling neighborhoods like Montmartre and Luxembourg Gardens even more enjoyable. Plus, café terraces become the perfect spot for people-watching with a warm drink in hand. You’ll find fewer tourists than in summer but still plenty of energy on the streets and museums open for exploring. Late September through early November is the sweet spot before the winter chill rolls in.

Tuscany, Italy
Tuscany in the fall is an absolute feast for the senses, truly. Rolling hills covered in autumn colors and vineyards buzzing with grape harvests make it a dream for wine lovers. This is hands down the best time to enjoy tastings and lively harvest festivals. The weather stays mild and pleasant, so you can explore charming towns like Florence, Siena, and Pisa without the summer crowds. Plus, the seasonal food markets are bursting with fresh finds like truffles and other local delights. Late September through October is the sweet spot to experience Tuscany at its full fall glory.

Hocking Hills, Ohio
Hocking Hills is seriously one of Ohio’s most stunning natural spots, and fall is hands down the best time to visit. We went there last fall with our dogs and had the best time hiking the dog-friendly trails, then warming up in those cozy sauna pods (which are an absolute must and my personal favorite part). The whole place gets covered in gorgeous fall colors, making it a dream for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who loves snapping photos.
Spots like Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave feel even more magical surrounded by vibrant leaves. Plus, the cooler temps make exploring way more comfortable, and there are plenty of cozy cabins around for the perfect weekend escape. Mid to late October is when the colors really pop, so that’s the sweet spot to plan your trip.

My Fall Travel Bucket List
Now that we’ve covered the places I have traveled to during the fall, let’s move onto the places I want to travel to! Each destination brings its own unique characteristics to the cozy, crispy season, from breathtaking foliage and incredible mountain views to exciting fall festivals and rich cultural celebrations. I’ll talk about what each place is, what caught my eye, and why they’re on my must-visit list for future fall seasons!
Stowe, Vermont
One of New England’s most beloved charming towns, Stowe is basically made for fall. Nestled in the mountains, it offers postcard-perfect fall foliage, classic covered bridges, and cozy inns that make you want to slow down and soak it all in.
As for things to do, Stowe has plenty of options, all of which are family-friendly, perfect for couples, or even ideal for solo travel. You can ride up Mount Mansfield on a gondola for incredible canopy views, rent a car and drive through Smugglers’ Notch, or stop into Cold Hollow Cider Mill for fresh apple cider and cider donuts. (If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love apple cider donuts!)
If you’re planning an East Coast trip and want to experience peak colors with that charming small town feel, Stowe should definitely be on your list. It’s definitely on mine!

Telluride, Colorado
Telluride is a mountain town that’s stunning no matter the season, but fall really takes it up a notch. Surrounded by golden aspens and crisp mountain air, it’s an outdoor lover’s dream come true. In fact, Telluride is known for what travelers call its “Golden Aspen Peak,” when millions of trees turn vivid fall shades all at once. (Visit through late September to Early October to see them in their prime!)
Hiking is more enjoyable thanks to 60°F temps, fewer crowds means better availability to explore dining and shopping opportunities, and scenic drives offer amazing fall views you can’t get anywhere else. If you’re planning fall trips mainly for stunning foliage, add Telluride to your list.
White Mountains, New Hampshire
If you want some of the Northeast’s most vivid fall foliage, the White Mountains should be at the top of your list. Known for its world-renowned views, you can see vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows across the entire region. And because leaves change at different elevations, you get a little bit of everything.
Explore Franconia Notch State Park for panoramic views, explore nearby orchards for pumpkin picking and corn mazes, and visit Jackson Village for the iconic Pumpkin People display. Oh, and don’t forget to drive along the Kanacamagus Highway! This 34-mile byway offers non-stop fall views that you’ll be thinking about long after you leave.
Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor is a peaceful seaside town packed with coastal charm. It’s also the gateway to Acadia National Park, where mountains meet the ocean and fall colors light up every trail. Because you’re traveling in the fall, you get to beat the summer crowds… and the hot coastal temps!
Plus, this is your chance to hit up Acadia’s Oktoberfest, a local fall festival that features local breweries, live music, and fun competitions. It’s hands down one of the most beautiful places to visit in the fall, offering the perfect mix of rugged coastline and forest hikes.
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston perfectly blends city culture with that classic East Coast autumn vibe. You get the warm daytime temps that make sweater-weather totally possible, the natural beauty of the changing leaves, and plenty of fun things to do to pass the time. Think: Brick row houses, the three-day international rowing competition, and maybe even a late-season game at Fenway Park!
And the most exciting park? If you’re a big fan of Halloween, (guilty; just check out my Halloween costumes!), Salem is just a quick drive away. More specifically, you can reach this lively fall town in just under an hour! No matter what’s on your itinerary, the city’s rich history and vibrant neighborhoods truly come alive with fall colors and seasonal events.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole in the fall is seriously a dream with fresh crisp air, way fewer crowds, and stunning mountain vibes everywhere you look. It’s the perfect time to explore Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks without the summer rush. Plus, this is when you can spot peak wildlife activity, which is such a special little bonus.
From what I’ve researched, you’ll want to book your trip after Labor Day. This makes scenic drives, golden aspens, and reservations all easier to snag (and enjoy!). Whether you’re hiking trails, trying your hand at fly fishing, or just cozying up by the fire after a day of adventure, fall here feels like the perfect mix of excitement and total relaxation.
Woodstock, Vermont
If you want a spot that feels like it popped right out of a fall movie, Woodstock is it. Covered bridges, farmers markets, and streets blanketed in leaves make it the ultimate cozy autumn escape. And actually, Sleepy Hollow Farm, one of the most photographed fall destinations, is right here in Woodstock! You can take wagon rides, try your hand at pumpkin carving, stop by Sugarbush Farm for local snacks, and enjoy all the farm-to-table dining you’ve ever dreamt of.
Peak foliage usually happens in early to mid-October, so timing your visit then means you’ll catch the town at its absolute best. And according to locals, you’ll definitely want to check out the food truck festivals and explore local shops.
Alexandria, Virginia
And if you feel like keeping things lowkey, you can stroll through red-brick sidewalks, walk along the Mount Vernon Trail, or enjoy a fun ghost and graveyard tour! Needless to say, October is the sweet spot for visiting, with gorgeous fall colors everywhere you turn.
Just a stone’s throw from D.C., Alexandria is packed with historic charm and fall vibes. Think fall festivals, leisurely waterfront walks along the Potomac, and strolling Old Town’s quaint boutiques and colonial streets with way fewer tourists than usual. Alexandria is also known for its outdoor art and harvest festivals, where you can explore the area like a true local!
Napa Valley, California
Fall in Napa Valley means harvest season, and it’s honestly one of the best times to visit. The vineyards glow with gorgeous yellows and reds, and the wineries buzz with excitement. Plus, you get to enjoy daytime temps sitting around the mid-70s and mid-50s at night. It’s the best time to relax, taste some new wine, and enjoy all of the views as you do so.
September and October are prime for tastings, vineyard tours, and some seriously amazing farm-to-table dining. If you love wine and fall vibes, Napa during harvest is everything. And here’s a fun tip I learned from locals while researching: the cool weather makes hot air balloon rides a must-do!

French Lick, Indiana
French Lick is a charming and totally unexpected fall getaway, and one of my favorite travel destinations in my home-state! I’ve been many times and it’s always so charming. It’s known for its historic resort, scenic train rides, and those beautiful wooded hills that really come alive with color in autumn. Fall here means stunning views from the French Lick Scenic Railway or the elegant West Baden Springs Hotel.
It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing weekend, especially if you love spas, golf, or just taking it slow. Plan your visit for mid to late October to catch the best foliage and enjoy some truly pleasant weather.
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is a total stunner in the fall, with rugged coastlines, towering mountains, and some of the East Coast’s best leaf colors. Daily temperatures making afternoon hikes incredible, the clear skies offer unparalleled stargazing opportunities, and tourist crowds drop significantly. Acadia National Park is honestly a perfect destination to add to your bucket list if you’re outdoorsy. The region is full of biking, hiking, and walking trails, making getting outside feel like a total treat.
Plan your visit between late September and mid-October to catch the peak foliage and avoid the crowds. It’s the perfect spot to breathe in fresh air and soak up those unforgettable autumn views.

Prague in the fall feels like stepping into a storybook. The city’s gothic architecture, cobblestone streets, and rooftops look even more enchanting framed by autumn leaves. Wander through Old Town Square, cross the Charles Bridge at sunrise, and climb up to Prague Castle for sweeping views of the city draped in fall colors.
The crowds thin out after September, and October brings crisp but comfortable weather, which is perfect for exploring on foot. And don’t miss the cozy pubs where you can warm up with a hearty plate of goulash and a cold pint.

Copenhagen in autumn is effortlessly cozy. As temperatures drop in October and November, cafés fill with candlelight and locals lean into the season with bike rides, comfort food, and warm drinks. Take a stroll through Tivoli Gardens, which often dresses up for Halloween, or explore the colorful harbor at Nyhavn.
The fall foliage in parks like King’s Garden and Frederiksberg Gardens adds a splash of color to the city’s charm. It’s also a great time to enjoy Denmark’s world-class design shops and museums without the summer crowds.
Vienna, Austria
Vienna is elegant no matter the season, but fall brings this quieter, more romantic vibe that you’ll absolutely adore. October is the perfect time to stroll through Stadtpark and soak up those golden autumn tones. And of course, you can’t miss popping into one of Vienna’s legendary coffeehouses for a slice of Sachertorte.
The Vienna State Opera kicks off its season in fall, so culture lovers will be in heaven. The weather is mild, the streets are less crowded, and the city’s stunning architecture shines like never before.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh is the ultimate cozy autumn city. With its cobblestone streets, centuries-old pubs, and those famously moody skies, it’s perfect for fall vibes. More specifically, Edinburgh is one of those fall destinations that’s rich with culture. You can hike Arthur’s Seat, wander through Princes Street Garden, stroll underground haunted vaults, or, for those who enjoy unique tastings, visit the Scotch Whiskey Experience!

Upper Peninsula, Michigan
The Upper Peninsula is one of those hidden gems that totally shines in the fall, and you won’t have to fight crowds to enjoy it. Places like Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, and the Porcupine Mountains are absolutely breathtaking when fall hits.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado sits along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, and is a total must-visit for fall lovers. The leaves turn stunning golds and yellows as early as the beginning of September, and all of the vast lakes in the region offer incredible mirrored views. You can listen to the elk at sunrise and sunset, drive up Trail Ridge Road, or walk Old Fall River Road for a waterfall-filled climb.
According to locals, the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park is mid-to-late September. Here, you can experience prime Elk mating season, watch the trees transform into bright golden hues, and enjoy significantly fewer crowds.
