Some of my favorite times of year are spent leaf peeping, whether it’s on a scenic drive through the mountains, wandering small towns, or exploring national parks bursting with fall colors.

Fall foliage is the moment when green leaves give way to brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow as the weather cools and the days get shorter. I love wandering through small towns blanketed in fiery leaves, cruising along a scenic drive with golden trees stretching as far as the eye can see, or hiking trails with a canopy of red orange and yellow above me. There’s just something about fall that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
When Does Fall Foliage Start
Timing is everything when it comes to fall foliage. The best time of year to visit depends on your destination. Up north, in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, the colors usually peak in early to mid-October. In the Great Smoky Mountains or North Carolina, mid-October is perfect for a cabin weekend surrounded by fall colors. Further west, in places like Aspen, Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains, peak color often comes later, like late October into early November.
