Carmel is easily one of my favorite areas around Indianapolis, and there is SO much more to do here than you might expect from a suburb! Between the walkable Arts and Design District, restaurants and local shops, the Monon Trail, and events happening throughout the year, you could easily spend an entire day exploring and still have plenty left for your next visit.

I genuinely know Carmel well because I actually grew up around here! I’ve lived in the Indianapolis area my entire life, starting out in Carmel, then Fishers, and eventually Indianapolis, and even now I’m in Carmel almost every single week. Between meeting friends for coffee, trying restaurants, attending events and honestly just finding excuses to spend time here, it’s probably the area I visit the most. So after YEARS of exploring, I’ve put together my local guide to the best things to do in Carmel Indiana, including longtime favorites, seasonal activities and places I genuinely think are worth adding to your plans. Whether you’re planning a date night, visiting with family or just looking for a fun way to spend the day, these are the Carmel spots and experiences I’d start with!

14 Things To Do In Carmel Indiana

One of the things I love about Carmel is that you can easily fill an entire day without needing some crazy packed itinerary. Many of the best things to do are clustered around the Arts & Design District, Midtown, Carmel City Center and along the Monon Trail, so you can park once and spend hours walking between shops, restaurants, and different activities. Of course, there are plenty of places worth venturing outside of these main areas for too!

Explore the Carmel Arts & Design District

If you’re visiting Carmel for the first time, I’d start in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Centered around Main Street, this is one of the most recognizable parts of Carmel and one of my favorite areas to simply walk around and see where you end up. It’s filled with local boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and public art, so there’s always somewhere to pop into along the way.

To be honestly you don’t really need a plan here! Park the car, wander through a few shops, grab a coffee or cocktail and stop for a meal when you get hungry. Keep an eye out for the life-size sculptures scattered throughout the district too. They’ve become such a recognizable part of Carmel and make walking around a little more fun than simply going from one store to the next.

You’ll also find easy access to the Monon Trail right from the district, which I definitely recommend taking advantage of. From here, you can hop on the trail and walk straight down to Midtown Plaza, making it really easy to combine both areas into one afternoon without getting back in the car.

Walk or Bike the Monon Trail

One of my favorite things about downtown Carmel is just how easy it is to explore on foot, and the Monon Trail is a huge part of that! The trail runs right through some of the busiest areas of Carmel, including the Arts & Design District and Midtown, so you can walk, run or bike it, but you can also simply use it to get from one part of Carmel to another without ever moving your car.

If you’re looking for free things to do in Carmel, going for a walk or bringing your bikes to ride the Monon is an easy one. But even if you aren’t specifically coming to Carmel for the trail, you’ll probably end up on it at some point anyway! I especially love that you can wander around the Arts & Design District, hop onto the Monon and walk down to Midtown for a drink, food or whatever is going on there that day.

Hang Out at Midtown & Carmel City Center

Midtown is SUCH a fun addition to Carmel and has really helped connect everything happening around the Arts & Design District and Carmel City Center. The Monon runs straight through it, and the plaza has outdoor seating, games, a huge screen and plenty of space to just hang out when the weather is nice. There are also restaurants and places to grab a drink, like Sun King, all around it, so this is an easy spot to work into your day without necessarily needing a big plan.

It’s also really family friendly! Kids have room to run around and play while the adults can actually sit down with a drink or something to eat, which feels like a win for everyone. And you definitely don’t have to have kids to enjoy it. I’ve met friends around here plenty of times, and it’s just a fun area to grab food, hang out outside or walk around for a bit. There’s free parking nearby too, and since so much of the actual plaza is free to enjoy, you really don’t have to spend much money here unless you want to.

Catch a Show at the Palladium or Feinstein’s

Carmel has a fantastic live entertainment scene, and if you’re planning a night out, I’d definitely check what’s playing at the Palladium or Feinstein’s while you’re in town. The Palladium is part of Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts, along with the Tarkington and Studio Theater, and they bring in concerts, comedians and all kinds of different performances throughout the year.

But for a date night, I especially love Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael! It’s a much smaller, cabaret-style venue where you can order dinner and cocktails right at your table while watching the show. We went to see a country show here and had SUCH a fun night. It feels a little dressier and more special than your typical dinner-and-a-show date without being overly formal.

And because it’s right inside Hotel Carmichael, you could very easily turn this into a whole night staycation like I do. Grab dinner and see a show, walk around City Center afterward, and if you really want to make a night of it, book a room and turn it into a little Carmel staycation. Because why not?!

Plan a Staycation at Hotel Carmichael

If you’re looking for a fun date night or an excuse for a little staycation, Hotel Carmichael is such a beautiful spot right in the heart of Carmel City Center! This gorgeous boutique hotel is within walking distance of the Palladium, Monon Trail, restaurants and shopping, so you can easily make a whole weekend out of it.

My personal favorite part is that you don’t even have to leave the hotel for a great night out! There’s Vivante Restaurant & Bar for dinner, Adagio Lounge for cocktails (some of the best I’ve had) and live piano music, and Feinstein’s for dinner and a live show. We’ve been to Feinstein’s for a country show and had such a fun time! I especially love the idea of staying here during the holidays since you’re just steps from the Carmel Christkindlmarkt and ice skating at Carter Green. Talk about the most perfect little Christmas staycation.

Shop Around Carmel

If shopping is your thing, Carmel has plenty of places to browse! I’d start in the Arts & Design District, where you’ll find a mix of local boutiques, specialty shops and galleries along Main Street. This is my favorite area to shop if you also want to grab a coffee, stop for lunch and just wander around for a while rather than driving from store to store.

For even more shopping, head over to Clay Terrace, an outdoor shopping center with a mix of national retailers, restaurants and smaller shops. And honestly, I’m at Clay Terrace ALL the time. It’s one of those places that’s easy to work into a Carmel day whether you’re actually planning to shop or just want to walk around, grab something to eat and inevitably end up popping into a few stores anyway.

Between Clay Terrace, the Arts & Design District and the shops around Carmel City Center, you could easily make an entire afternoon out of shopping, especially when the weather is nice!

Visit the Famous Cake Bake Shop

If there’s one place in Carmel that is absolutely worth the hype, it’s The Cake Bake Shop! This gorgeous, whimsical restaurant is one of my FAVORITE places to celebrate a special occasion, and visiting for my birthday has actually become a yearly tradition for us. Between the over-the-top seasonal decorations, beautiful dining rooms and incredible cakes, the entire place feels like something out of a fairytale!

The original Cake Bake Shop opened in Broad Ripple, but this much larger Carmel location at the Carmel City Center really took things to another level. It became SO popular that they even went on to open a location at Walt Disney World! While the cakes are obviously a huge draw, this is a full-service restaurant too, making it perfect for everything from a little girls’ tea party or drinks with friends to a romantic dinner or birthday celebration.

I make a point to visit every year to see the seasonal decorations, and you already know I’m ordering my favorites: the Velvet Chicken Soup and a slice of Raspberry Champagne Cake. SO good! It’s definitely a splurge, but in my opinion, the food, atmosphere and entire experience make it worth it. I’d recommend making reservations ahead of time, especially if you’re visiting for a special occasion or during the holidays!

Get Outside at Carmel’s Parks & Gardens

Carmel has SO many parks and green spaces, so if the weather is nice, I’d definitely work a little outdoor time into your day! You don’t need to go park hopping or anything crazy, but they’re a great way to break up all the shopping, eating and exploring, especially if you’re visiting with kids.

Flowing Well Park is a unique one because you can actually fill up a bottle with water from the artesian well, while the Kawachinagano Japanese Garden is a small but beautiful spot to walk around near Carmel City Hall. If you’re visiting during the summer with kids, The Waterpark at Monon Community Center is an easy way to make an entire afternoon out of it. And then there’s Coxhall Gardens, which is one of the prettiest outdoor spaces in the area and a great option if you want somewhere a little more scenic to walk around or have a picnic.

I definitely wouldn’t try to squeeze all of these into one Carmel day. Pick whichever one makes the most sense with the rest of your plans and save the others for next time!

Eat & Drink Your Way Around Carmel

Okay, Carmel has a REALLY good food scene, and considering how often I’m here, I’ve made my way around quite a few of the restaurants over the years. There are tons of options ranging from casual patios and brunch spots to steakhouses and nicer date-night restaurants, so you could plan your entire Carmel day around where you want to eat. Which, obviously, I fully support.

One of my personal favorites is 1933 Lounge by St. Elmo. If you’ve already been to the downtown Indianapolis or Fishers locations and think you’ve seen it, nope. The Carmel location is on a whole other level. It’s much larger with a stunning interior, huge bar, and an incredible covered patio, while still having all the St. Elmo favorites you’d expect. Just keep in mind that 1933 is 21+.

There are plenty of other great Carmel restaurants too. Anthony’s Chophouse is a popular choice for steak and a nicer night out, Monterey Coastal Cuisine is right along Main Street for seafood and sushi, and Savor is another Arts & Design District favorite with wood-fired dishes, pasta, seafood and steaks. And this is really only scratching the surface of Carmel’s food scene!

Shop the Carmel Farmers Market

If you’re visiting Carmel on a Saturday during market season, definitely add the Carmel Farmers Market to your morning plans! It’s held at Carter Green and is a fun place to wander around, grab something to eat and shop from local vendors before heading off to explore more of Carmel.

I especially like this one because of the location. You’re already right by the Palladium and Carmel City Center along the Monon with Midtown nearby, so you can easily make the market your first stop and then spend the rest of the day exploring from there.

Celebrate at Carmel’s Festivals & Annual Events

One of the things I love about Carmel is that there is almost ALWAYS something going on, especially once the weather warms up! Between festivals, concerts, markets and seasonal events, it’s definitely worth checking the local calendar before your visit because there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find something fun happening while you’re here.

One of my favorites is CarmelFest, Carmel’s huge Fourth of July celebration with food vendors, games and, of course, a big fireworks display! During the summer months, there are also tons of concerts and outdoor events happening around Carmel, including along Main Street in the Arts & Design District. It’s such a fun time of year to be in the area because there always seems to be something going on outside. Another favorite is the annual Taste of Carmel event, and of course the famous Carmel Christkindlmarkt, but more on that later!

Having a great time at the annual Taste of Carmel event!

Go Ice Skating at Carter Green

Every winter, Carter Green transforms into The Ice at Carter Green, an outdoor ice skating rink right in the middle of Carmel City Center. It runs from November through February, but my FAVORITE time to go is during the holidays when the rink is surrounded by the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. It seriously feels like you’re skating right in the middle of a little European Christmas market!

We’ve done this several times over the years, and I definitely recommend buying your tickets ahead of time, especially if you’re going while the market is happening. We always book one of the earlier skating times to beat some of the crowds and then make a whole day out of it. We’ll skate first and head into the Christkindlmarkt afterward for lunch and shopping, which has become such a fun holiday tradition! It’s a relatively inexpensive activity where skating is $11 for adults and $9 for kids, with skate rentals available for an additional $4. I do recommend booking your skating time slot in advance!

Experience the Carmel Christkindlmarkt

Speaking of the holidays, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is easily a bucket list Christmas activity! I’ve been going for years and have attended the media nights since the market first opened, so at this point I’ve experienced it quite a few times, and I still look forward to going back every Christmas season.

The market completely transforms Carter Green into a German-inspired Christmas market filled with wooden vendor huts, authentic German food and drinks, live German music, handmade gifts and all kinds of festive treats. Add in the huge Christmas pyramid, twinkle lights and ice rink right in the middle of everything, and the whole area is SUCH a fun place to spend a holiday afternoon.

Take it from someone who has been many many times, go early if you can! The market can get very busy (like shoulder to shoulder busy), especially on weekends as you get closer to Christmas. We usually start with an early skating time and then head into the market for lunch before the biggest crowds arrive. If you have the flexibility to visit on a weekday, even better!

Visit the Museum of Miniature Houses

For something a little different, stop into the Museum of Miniature Houses & Other Collections while you’re exploring the Arts & Design District. The museum is dedicated entirely to miniature art, with tiny furnished rooms, houses and other incredibly detailed displays that you can get up close and explore.

It’s also right along Main Street, so you don’t have to go out of your way to visit. I’d pair it with an afternoon walking around the Arts & Design District, shopping and grabbing lunch or coffee nearby. It’s one of those quirky little Carmel attractions that you might not expect to find here, which is exactly why I think it deserves a spot on the list!

Where to Eat and Stay Near Carmel

If you’re turning your visit into an overnight trip, Carmel is actually a really nice place to base yourself while exploring the Indianapolis area. You get plenty of restaurants, shopping and entertainment right in Carmel, but you’re still close enough to head into Indianapolis for part of the day without feeling like you’re planning two completely separate trips.

I’d personally look for somewhere around Carmel City Center, Midtown or the Arts & Design District if you want to be close to the action. Staying in this area puts you near the Palladium, Monon Trail and tons of restaurants, plus you can actually walk to quite a bit once you’re here. Hotel Carmichael is especially convenient if you want something a little nicer and want to be right in the middle of City Center.

And definitely come hungry because Carmel has a LOT of good restaurants! If you’re planning to explore Carmel and beyond, check out my Best Restaurants in Indianapolis guide. You can also easily spend a day exploring downtown while you’re here, and my Things to Do in Downtown Indianapolis guide has plenty more ideas for building out the rest of your trip.

Tips for Visiting Carmel

Don’t Be Intimidated By The Roundabouts

Yes, Carmel has A LOT of roundabouts, but I promise they’re not as intimidating as they look! I don’t just say that because I took driver’s ed in Carmel either. Pay attention to the signs and your lane before entering, yield to traffic already in the roundabout, and after you’ve driven through a few, you’ll be a pro.

Park Once & Explore on Foot

One of my favorite things about downtown Carmel is how easy it is to park and explore from there. The Arts & Design District, Midtown and Carmel City Center are all connected by the Monon Trail, with plenty of free parking nearby. Find a spot, leave the car and wander!

Check the Events Calendar

There is almost ALWAYS something happening in Carmel, especially during the summer and holidays. Check the events calendar before you go because you may find a festival, concert or market to add to your plans. It’ll also give you a heads-up about bigger crowds during events like CarmelFest and Christkindlmarkt.

Make Dinner Reservations

Carmel is SUCH a popular date-night and dining destination, so I recommend making reservations for popular restaurants, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Definitely plan ahead if you’re pairing dinner with a show at the Palladium or Feinstein’s!

Pair Carmel with Indianapolis and Fishers

If you’re visiting from out of town, you definitely don’t have to choose between Carmel and Indianapolis. It’s easy to spend a day exploring Carmel and another downtown, and Fishers is another quick addition, especially if you’re attending something at the Fishers Event Center.

Carmel is one of those places that can really be whatever kind of day you’re in the mood for. You can walk the Monon and explore the Arts & Design District, shop and grab lunch around City Center, catch a show at the Palladium or turn it into a full date night with dinner. Add in the parks, farmers market, festivals and all the holiday fun, and there’s honestly something going on here pretty much year-round!

Even after growing up in Carmel and spending my entire life around the greater Indianapolis area, it’s STILL somewhere I’m exploring all the time. Whether you’re visiting Carmel Indiana for the first time or you’re a local looking for something new to do, hopefully you found a few ideas to add to your next Carmel day!
