New York City is one of those places that just buzzes with energy. From the moment you step onto the sidewalk, you’re in it, and it’s easily one of my all-time favorite places to visit. There’s just something about the twinkling lights, iconic skyline, and nonstop list of things to do that makes it feel truly magical. Here’s the thing: there’s no single “best” area to stay in New York City because it all depends on the kind of trip you’re planning. The city is a patchwork of neighborhoods, each with its own personality, charm, and pace. That’s why I’ve organized this guide into helpful categories, whether it’s your very first NYC visit and you want to hit all the top landmarks, restaurants and art galleries, or you’ve been a dozen times and want something a little more local and low-key.
From luxe hotels in Midtown Manhattan to budget-friendly gems in Brooklyn, this guide will help you narrow it down and feel confident about where you’re booking. Let’s find your perfect home base in the city that never sleeps.

Where to Stay in New York for First-Time Visitors
If it’s your first time in New York City, I highly recommend starting with a stay in Midtown Manhattan. It’s one of the most central and convenient places to be, you’ll be within walking distance of iconic sights like Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building Times Square, the Upper East Side, and Fifth Avenue. It’s a great home base when you want to check off the major bucket-list attractions without spending half your day commuting.
Another great option? The Financial District down in Lower Manhattan. You’ll be close to spots like the Brooklyn Bridge, One World Observatory, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and the ferries to the Statue of Liberty. Plus, it’s typically quieter in the evenings compared to Midtown, which can be a nice break after a busy day of sightseeing. Plus, many Midtown and Downtown hotels offer skyline or even Hudson River views for that iconic New York backdrop.
When I visited NYC for the first time, we split our stay between Midtown and Downtown, and I loved how it gave us two different experiences. Midtown brought the classic New York hustle and bustle, while Downtown felt a little more laid back and local. Whichever you choose, you’ll have quick access to the entire city thanks to the subway system and public transportation, so don’t stress too much. You really can’t go wrong!
M Social Hotel Times Square
I stayed at M Social Hotel Times Square on my very first trip to NYC, and honestly? It was the perfect choice. This modern, stylish hotel is right in the heart of Midtown, making it a dream base for exploring all the major sights like Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, you name it. You’re seriously just steps away from the action.
The rooms are spacious (which is saying a lot for NYC), super clean, and thoughtfully designed, with many offering incredible views of the city. But the real highlight? The rooftop restaurant and bar, Beast & Butterflies. Not only is the food great, but the view of Times Square from up there is next-level—especially at night when the lights are glowing and the city feels totally electric. It’s one of the big reasons I booked this hotel and it did not disappoint.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, M Social strikes that perfect balance between location, comfort, and wow-factor.

The hotels in New York is really pricy! My last visit was in 2016 and I wish I could visit there soon.
I wish I had this when looking for inexpensive accommodations in NYC for my son and his friends–will save this for their next trip.
I’ve been to NYC a few times and always tried to find somewhere where I can also enjoy the city view, so thanks for some of the hotel options, I’ll save these for next time!
So many great options. I find it interesting that midtown is busier than downtown. it’s nice to know that budget options like pods exist.
