What Are the Safest Countries for Solo Female Travelers?

Iceland

Ranking as the safest country in the world, naturally Iceland is first up on the list for solo female travelers. That means you can explore freely without constantly looking over your shoulder. Crime is super low and people are respectful. Oh, and almost everyone speaks English, so getting around is a breeze.

There’s also so much to do solo. Think Golden Circle day group tours, glacier hikes, or snorkeling between tectonic plates (which is so cool—literally). Then, at the end of a long day, make sure to soak in dreamy geothermal spas like Sky Lagoon. If you’re up for a road trip, the Ring Road takes you through waterfalls, volcanoes, black sand beaches, and fjords. And yes, it’s safe to drive it solo.

Whether you’re wandering around cozy cafes in Reykjavik or chasing the Northern Lights, Iceland has the perfect mix of epic adventure and peaceful vibes.

Japan

Japan is hands-down one of the safest countries in the world for solo travelers. The crime rate is super low, the locals are kind and respectful, and the trains? Spotless, on time, and easy to navigate, even if you don’t speak a word of Japanese. It’s totally normal to see women walking alone at night in cities like Tokyo or Kyoto, which says a lot. And for a little extra peace of mind, some train lines even have women-only cars during rush hour.

Oh, and dining alone? Completely normal in Japan. Most restaurants have counter seating, so you can slurp your ramen or snack on savory sushi without feeling awkward. If you’re headed to Tokyo, expect high-tech neighborhoods, quirky themed cafes, and peaceful gardens. Kyoto is a bit slower paced, full of ancient temples and traditional tea houses. Whether you’re after culture, calm, or cutting-edge city life, Japan’s got it all.

Switzerland

Switzerland is one of those dream destinations that’s just as safe as it is stunning. It consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world, which is a total win for solo female travelers. The crime rate is super low, the trains are like clockwork (seriously, Swiss timing is real), and the whole country just runs with quiet, clean efficiency.

You’ll feel completely at ease exploring, whether you’re strolling through a city after dark or adventuring to a small town in the Alps. Spend your time wandering fairytale cities like Lucerne, Bern, or Zurich. Or, if you’re after something quiet and serene, sit lakeside and enjoy the mountain views of Lake Geneva. From scenic train rides on the Glacier Express to cable car rides up to Jungfraujoch, Switzerland is a top choice for solo female travelers.

Norway

If you’re dreaming of epic views and a unique solo travel experience, Norway should definitely be on your list. Crime? Super low. Locals? So respectful and basically all fluent in English. Whether you’re wandering around the streets of Oslo or hopping around the colorful harbor in Bergen, everything feels so easy. Oh, and of course, just as safe and clean.

Getting around is a breeze, too, since the trains and buses are really reliable. Even the most remote hikes or tiny coastal towns feel totally accessible and comfortable to explore solo.

Now, let’s talk about the actual magic of Norway. Think: jaw-dropping fjords, glacial lakes you can kayak across, and the chance to see the Northern Lights. In the summer, you’ll get to soak up that dreamy midnight sun, giving you a few extra hours for exploring. Whether you’re into Viking history, wild landscapes, or just want a peaceful solo escape with a view, Norway totally delivers.

Portugal

If you’re thinking about booking a solo trip to Europe, Portugal is one of the safest (and most underrated) spots. Honestly, most travelers say they’ve never felt unsafe or out of place here. Just keep your bag close in busy areas like metro stations, and you’re golden.

Now for the fun part, what to do. Lisbon and Porto are full of charm. They have cobblestone streets, tiled buildings, and gorgeous river views. You can wander from a 16th-century cathedral to a trendy cafe in a matter of minutes. Oh, and don’t skip the pastries. (Pastéis de nata = life-changing!)

Looking for something more chill? Head to the Algarve or Alentejo regions for jaw-dropping beaches, coastal hikes, and quiet villages where time feels like it slows down. Sip vinho verde in the Douro Valley, join a food tour in Lisbon, or trek the dramatic cliffs of Rota Vicentina. Portugal is solo-travel friendly in all the best ways.

Ireland

Ireland comes highly recommended for women travelling alone. It ranked as the third safest country in the world with low crime rates and super respectful communities. It’s one of those places where getting around solo feels totally natural, even if it’s your first time.

Of course, like anywhere, you’ll want to stay smart in busy city areas and skip dark alleys at night. But overall? Ireland is as friendly and easygoing as they come.

In Dublin, you can walk through Trinity College, sip a pint at the Guinness Storehouse, or enjoy live Irish music in a cozy cafe. Day trips from the city will have you standing at the edge of the Cliffs of Moher. You’ll also wander peaceful monastic ruins in Glendalough or hike through the lush trails of Killarney National Park

More interested in enjoying an authentic coastal experience? Galway and Cork are full of charm, color, and artsy vibes. And getting there is a breeze via public transport or small group tours (hello, new travel besties!).

South Korea

If South Korea isn’t already on your solo travel list, it’s time to add it—like, now! You’ll be impressed by its safety, cleanliness, respectful culture, and easily accessible public transportation.

In cities like Seoul and Busan, walking alone—even late at night—feels completely safe for solo female travelers. The streets are well-lit, signs are easy to follow (lots of English!), and buses and trains run like clockwork. Sure, things like petty theft or drink spiking can happen, but they’re rare. A little awareness and the usual solo travel smarts go a long way here.

So, what can you actually do while you’re there? So much!

In Seoul, you can hop between places like Gyeongbokgung, snack your way through Myeongdong street food stalls, and shop vintage finds in Insadong. Or grab a latte in a themed cafe (I’m personally a big fan of the cute dog cafes I’ve heard of). Want to get hands-on? Try a kimchi-making class or book a traditional hanbok photoshoot. Oh, and don’t leave without treating yourself to jjimjilbang (Korean spa). You deserve it!

Canada

Canada is one of the safest places you can travel solo—and that’s not just me saying it. With low crime, high quality of life, and a strong sense of equality, it’s the kind of destination that feels welcoming the second you land. Cities are well-lit, public transportation is reliable, and everyone from baristas to bus drivers is usually super friendly. (Seriously, Canadians live up to their reputation.)

In Vancouver, rent a bike and cruise through Stanley Park. Once you’re there, snack your way through Granville Island Market or grab a patio seat by the waterfront. Over in Toronto, explore multicultural neighborhoods, hit up the CN Tower for epic skyline views, and take a day trip to Niagara Falls. (Yes, it’s worth it!)

If you’re more of an outdoorsy girl, Canada delivers. Think hiking glacier-fed trails in Banff or Jasper, canoeing across crystal-clear lakes, or spotting wildlife in the Rockies. And if the East Coast is calling your name, head to Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island for cozy coastal vibes.

New Zealand

New Zealand is seriously one of the safest and most magical places you can travel solo. It’s kind of the dream setup for your next one-woman adventure.

Cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch are easy to get around—super walkable and laid-back, even at night. Everyone speaks English, public transport is clean and easy to figure out, and the locals (AKA Kiwis) are the best. They’re known for being extremely kind and helpful, making you feel right at home.

You can hike through jaw-dropping fjords in Milford Sound, dip into bubbling hot springs in Rotorua, and paddle through lagoons in the Bay of Islands. Or hop on a scenic train through the South Island’s wild, snowy peaks. In Auckland and Wellington, you’ll find cute cafes, coastal trails, and vibrant food markets. You can also expect a unique creative arts scene that feels both cool and cozy. And don’t forget about visiting Hobbiton, the movie set from The Lord of the Rings!

New Zealand is one of those rare places where you’ll feel safe, inspired, and completely free to explore on your own terms. A solo trip here isn’t just doable, it’s unforgettable.

Bhutan

Bhutan is one of the safest places on earth for solo female travelers. Seriously. The fact that you’re required to travel with a licensed local guide means it’s basically built for a worry-free experience.

Because of Bhutan’s tourism rules, you’ll have a guide with you the entire trip. As a result, you get an insider peek into the country’s deep-rooted traditions and peaceful way of life. Most women who’ve traveled solo here say they felt totally secure, whether they were wandering the streets of Thimphu or trekking way out in the mountains.

This place isn’t just about safety, though; it’s about soul. Bhutan’s all about Gross National Happiness (yes, really). You can basically feel this in the energy, preserved culture, and kindness and warmth of its people.

You can hike Tiger’s Nest Monastery (bucket list moment), catch colorful Tsechu festivals, and explore dreamy places like Phobjikha Valley. Expect peaceful hikes like the Gangtey Nature Trail or deeper pilgrimages along the Jomolhari route. You’ll also get to visit dzongs, ancient temples, and traditional farm villages that feel like stepping into another world.
