10 Warm Places to Travel in Winter for a Sun-Soaked Escape
I am such a fan of sneaking away on a winter vacation to warm-weather destinations. It’s the perfect cure for those cold winter blues. And I know, it can feel strange to think about beaches and sundresses when you’re bundled up in a scarf. That’s exactly why I put this post together.
I’ve rounded up the best warm places to travel in winter so you can trade gray skies for long sunny days. By the end, you’ll have more than enough ideas for your next warm-weather escape. And, honestly, you might even be tempted to plan multiple getaways this year!
How to Escape Winter: Easy Ways to Find Sunshine this Season
Choose warm (and affordable) destinations.
Listen, I love a cozy snow day as much as anyone. Hence, my “When Do Christmas Markets Start in Europe?” and “Solo Travel Holiday Packages” posts! That said, sometimes, you just need to escape and soak up a little sunshine.
So when I’m planning a winter getaway, I always look for destinations that are warm and affordable. My personal criteria? Daytime temps in the high 70s or warmer, plenty of sunshine, and lots of fun outdoor activities.
And every single destination I’m sharing in this post checks all those boxes—warm, sunny, and perfect for a mid-winter reset.
Book flights early or last-minute.
There are really only two foolproof ways to plan an amazing winter getaway without blowing your budget. Either book your flights way in advance or snag a last-minute deal. Sadly, the “somewhere in the middle” approach almost never works for winter travel.
I always use Google Flights and SkyScanner to hunt for the best prices, especially when my travel dates are flexible. Fortunately, both platforms let you set price alerts. This way, you’ll know the moment fares drop and you can grab a great deal before it disappears.

Plan your trip for January or February.
The best time to plan a warm-weather winter getaway? Late January into February. Once the holiday rush dies down, travel prices drop, and most people are back at work. That means fewer crowds and way better deals.
It’s the perfect window to enjoy tropical cities and beachy destinations without the chaos (or the high price tags).
Where to Travel in Winter for Warm Weather
Key West, Florida
If you’re craving sunshine and ocean breezes in the middle of winter, Key West is the perfect escape. As the southernmost point in the continental U.S., it stays warm year-round. Expect winter temps to hover around a blissful 75°F, which makes it the ideal getaway from snow and gray skies.
Spend your days snorkeling coral reefs, sipping mojitos on Duval Street, or biking past pastel conch houses. And you cannot miss the nightly Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. Here you can find stream performers, live music, and the most stunning golden hour views. For a little history, pop into the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. And make sure to climb the Key West Lighthouse for the prettiest island panoramas.
Winter is the best time to visit Key West. It’s easy, warm, and wonderfully carefree—no coats, no crowds, just turquoise water and endless sunshine.

Palm Springs, California
Palm Springs is one of those winter getaways that just feels effortlessly cool. Think sunshine, retro poolsides, and those iconic desert views framed by palm trees and mid-century architecture. With temperatures in the comfortable 70s°F, it’s the perfect place to warm up and slow down.
Spend your days browsing art galleries, unwinding in chic spas, or lounging by a vintage-inspired hotel pool. If you’re craving adventure, hike through Indian Canyons or ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for unreal views.
Palm Springs also makes an amazing base for day trips. Fall in love with the dreamy landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park or the beaches and museums of Los Angeles. Warm weather, good vibes, and endless sunshine? Yes, please.
Canary Islands, Spain
If you’re craving a winter escape that feels like full-on summer, the Canary Islands are calling your name. Tucked off the northwest coast of Africa, this Spanish island chain stays warm all year long. I’m talking mid-70°F even in January. It’s one of Europe’s most reliable spots for winter sun.
Each island has its own personality. Tenerife is all about volcanic beaches, charming old towns, and the dramatic silhouette of Mount Tiede. Gran Canaria, on the other hand, blends golden dunes with lush forests up north. Then you have Lanzarote, which feels like stepping into an artfully designed lava landscape. And finally, Fuerteventura wins with long beaches, turquoise water, and all the water sports you could want.
Days here are pure bliss: coastal walks, fresh seafood, colorful markets, and endless sunshine. Evenings stay warm enough for outdoor dining, and the relaxed island vibe makes unwinding effortless.
Phuket, Thailand
Phuket is one of those winter escapes that instantly switches your mood from freezing to carefree. With temperatures in the 80s°F and bright blue skies from December to March, it’s basically Thailand’s built-in warm-weather reset button.
Your days can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you want. Stay beachside in Kata, Karon, or Patong and soak up the sun. Or hop on a longtail boat to explore the dreamy Phi Phi Islands. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and sunset cruises are everyday magic here, and the water is warm enough to stay in for hours. On land, wander through night markets, take a Thai cooking class, or treat yourself to spa sessions.
Evenings in Phuket are pure romance meets island energy. Think golden sunsets, fresh seafood by the water, and lively beachfront bars. Warm, tropical, and full of adventure. Phuket is one of those dream vacations you see in travel magazines.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Cabo San Lucas makes you forget cold weather is even a thing. With sunshine almost every day and temps in the mid-70s to low 80s°F, it’s warm, breezy, and impossible not to love.
Most days revolve around the water. Think boat rides to El Arco, lounging on Medano Beach, or snorkeling in the clear coves around Chileno Bay. Winter is also peak whale-watching season, so keep an eye out for tails splashing just off the coastline! And if you’re feeling adventurous? Hop on an ATV through the desert or book a sunset sail with the cliffs as your backdrop.
Cabo’s food scene is just as good as the views. You’ll find everything from beachside taco spots to gorgeous marina restaurants serving fresh seafood and creative cocktails. And once the sun sets, the nightlife picks up with rooftop bars and seaside lounges.
The Bahamas
The Bahamas feels like stepping into a real-life postcard. It has turquoise water, powdery white sand, and sunshine that seems to follow you everywhere. Temperatures in the winter are in the mid-70s°F, making it one of the easiest, warmest getaways from the U.S.
Whether you stay in Nassau, Paradise Island, or the quieter Exumas, the islands are full of ways to unwind. Spend your days snorkeling coral reefs, swimming with sea turtles, or lounging on beaches. (They’re so soft they don’t feel real!) Island-hopping tours take you to hidden sandbars, turquoise lagoons, and yes—the iconic swimming pigs.
The Bahamas also shines in food and culture: fresh conch fritters, colorful local markets, and sunset rum cocktails. Most importantly, evenings stay warm and breezy—perfect for beachfront dinners or slow strolls along the marina.
Simple, sunny, and effortlessly relaxing—it’s exactly what a winter escape should be. Check out my blog, “How to Plan a Trip to the Bahamas,” to start planning your winter vacation.

Big Island, Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii is a winter escape (and one of the best beach honeymoon destinations) that’s both wildly adventurous and totally relaxing. With temperatures in the low 80s°F all season long, it’s the perfect place to trade snow for sunshine.
What makes the Big Island so special is its variety. You can snorkel with tropical fish in Kona’s clear blue water or drive through lush rainforests in the afternoon. To end your day, watch steam rise from lava fields at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. It’s one of the only places on Earth where you can safely experience an active volcanic landscape up close. Think: crater overlooks, steam vents, and miles of otherworldly terrain.
On the west coast, beaches like Hapuna and Makalawena deliver soft and calm turquoise waves. The east side brings waterfalls, botanical gardens, and the laid-back charm of Hilo. And once the sun sets? Expect seaside dinners and some of the clearest stargazing in the Pacific.
Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Manuel Antonio wraps you in warmth the second you arrive—perfect for a winter escape. You’re instantly greeted with tropical sunshine, lush, jungle-meets-ocean views, and temperatures that hover in the 80s°F. It’s the perfect place to ditch that puffy winter coat and slip straight into pura vida mode.
The highlight is Manuel Antonio National Park, where white-sand beaches meet crystal blue water. The beaches aren’t the only benefit, though—rainforest trails lead you past monkeys, sloths, and butterflies that look like they’re glowing. Mornings are for hiking through the jungle, afternoons are for swimming in warm waves, and evenings? Those are for fiery sunsets over the Pacific.
Outside the park, you’ll find cliffside boutique hotels, ocean-view restaurants, and endless adventures. Think: zip-lining, catamaran cruises, parasailing, surfing, you name it.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan is one of the easiest (and most exciting) warm-weather winter escapes. And the best part? No passport needed for U.S. travelers! With sunshine practically guaranteed, it’s the perfect place to trade icy mornings for beaches, culture, and color.
Start your trip in Old San Juan admiring pastel buildings, cobblestone streets, and historic forts like El Morro. Stop for a café con leche, browse local artisan markets, and soak in those ocean views. Then, once you’re ready for beach time, head to Condado or Ocean Park for soft sand, warm water, and Caribbean vibes.
Once the sun sets, the city comes alive. You can enjoy salsa dancing, rooftop bars, and incredible dishes, like monfogo, fresh seafood, and creamy tembleque. Warm, lively, and full of personality, San Juan blends beach days, culture, and nightlife in the best way. It’s the kind of winter getaway where you feel the island magic the moment you land.
Scottsdale, Arizona
Scottsdale, Arizona, boasts clear desert skies and endless sunny days. It’s literally the perfect place to escape the chill without leaving the U.S. And let’s be honest, winter is a great time to visit with fewer crowds and ideal weather.
Here, relaxation and adventure blend effortlessly. Mornings are made for hiking through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, where the desert turns gold at sunrise. Afternoons are for wandering Old Town Scottsdale. You’ll find art galleries, craft cocktails, boutique shopping, and some of the best wellness resorts in the country. If you love golf or great food, Scottsdale has plenty of both.
Evenings stay warm enough for patio dinners and sunset strolls, with mountain views that glow shades of pink and orange. Stylish, sun-soaked, and wonderfully laid-back, Scottsdale is the perfect winter escape if you’re craving warmth, comfort, and desert magic.
