In this blog post, I’m sharing the best (and safest) places to visit in Mexico. No matter if you’re planning a romantic vacation or a solo venture, there’s a place to pique every traveler’s interest. We spent our honeymoon in Mexico, and to this day (after all the places we’ve traveled) it’s still one of my absolute favorite trips we’ve ever taken! This list will help you stay safe while exploring all the beauty Mexico has to offer. Once you know exactly where to go, you’re able to focus on having fun and not stress about safety.
Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico?
Yes, traveling to Mexico is generally safe if you choose the right destination and use common sense. Just like the US (and most travel destinations out there) some areas are totally safe, while others are best avoided. Tourist spots like Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Loreto, Mérida, and central Mexico City are popular for a reason. They have strong security and welcome millions of travelers every year. On the other hand, some rural regions and border areas can be risky.
Do your research, stay in tourist-friendly areas, use trusted transportation, and stay aware, just like you would anywhere else.

How Safe Is Mexico for Tourists?
Stick to tourist-friendly areas.
One of my favorite things to do after arriving somewhere new? Take a long walk with no map, no agenda, and enjoy your surroundings. But when it comes to staying safe in Mexico, it’s smart to stick to the main tourist zones and resorts. Stay in busy areas where you’ll encounter other travelers. It’s best to skip isolated or unfamiliar neighborhoods, especially after dark.
Avoid carrying a lot of cash.
It’s always smart to have a little cash on you while traveling. Emphasis on a little! No matter where you travel, always avoid carrying large amounts of cash—it’s just not worth the risk. Flashing a wad of bills can easily make you a target. I like to use a money belt to protect my cash when out and about, especially from pickpockets.
If you need to grab more cash, use ATMs inside banks or hotels. Skip the random street machines in unprotected spots.
Use reliable transportation.
Getting around Mexico? Stick to official taxis, hotel shuttles, or rideshare apps like Uber. Trust me, random street taxis—especially in places like Mexico City—are a no-go. If you’re not doing much traveling once you reach your destination, this is really only something you need to keep in mind when traveling to and from the international airports. Nonetheless, it’s important to stay mindful and plan ahead.
Pro Tip: Some spots, like Playa del Carmen, don’t have Uber. Instead, use “The Radio Taxi App” as an alternative. Not only is it safer than hailing a random taxi, but it’s also easier to calculate costs and track your rides before and after they’re done.
Learn basic Spanish phrases.
A little Spanish goes a long way in Mexico. Seriously, knowing just a few basic phrases can help you feel more confident. And honestly, locals appreciate the effort. Plus, you’ll seem less like a lost tourist and more like you know what you’re doing. (Even if you kinda don’t.)
I always recommend downloading a free app like Duolingo before your trip. It makes learning the basics super easy and fun. Trust me, even being able to say “Buenos dias” and “Gracias” with confidence makes all the difference.
Be cautious at night.
If you’re walking back from dinner (or maybe a fun little tequila or mezcal tasting) just be extra cautious once it gets dark. Stick to well-lit, busy areas where there are plenty of people around. And if you’re enjoying those margaritas (which, obviously, you should), sip responsibly and never leave your drink unattended.
Oh, and this probably goes without saying, but don’t wander around alone at night in unfamiliar spots. If it feels dark, empty, and sketchy, it probably is. Just grab a trusted ride and play it safe.

What Are the Safest Places to Visit in Mexico?
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is that perfect mix of beach town charm and lively energy. It’s tucked along Mexico’s dreamy Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, with white-sand beaches and water so blue it doesn’t look real. We visited Playa during our honeymoon and did the most unforgettable sunset boat excursion—the kind where the sky turns pink, the drinks are flowing, and you’re sailing past the coastline with music playing in the background.
There’s so much to do by the water here—think beach clubs, snorkeling in cenotes, or wandering cute shops downtown. Or, get adventurous and explore nearby Mayan ruins. It’s more low-key than Cancun, but still has plenty of buzz, especially along Fifth Avenue (aka Quinta Avenida).
Playa is generally safe, especially around the beach and downtown. But like anywhere, keep your guard up and your eyes open.
Tulum
Tulum is basically the poster child for a trendy, boho beach getaway. Think jungle-chic hotels, white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear Caribbean water. We made a couple of day trips down to Tulum during our honeymoon to explore the hotel zone and check out the scene.
This is the kind of destination where it feels like everything is possible. In the morning, you can explore ancient Mayan ruins and learn about the rich and intricate culture. In the afternoons, enjoy swimming in dreamy cenotes as you marvel at the unique, natural structures. Then, in the evenings, sip margaritas at a beach club as you enjoy the stunning sunsets. The beach has gorgeous boutique hotels that offer that authentic “barefoot luxury” vibe. The town is much more relaxed and budget-friendly.
It’s the perfect mix of laid-back and luxe—think palm-lined roads, open-air boutiques, and jungle-framed beach clubs. You can rent a bike to cruise around, pop into a few of the beach clubs for drinks and ocean views, and don’t forget to snap a photo with the iconic “Follow That Dream” sign like we did! It’s definitely worth a visit if you want to soak up that boho-chic vibe Tulum’s so famous for.
Tulum is generally safe, especially in the hotel and beach areas. Just stick to well-lit spots at night and use trusted rides to get around.

As you do so, make sure to stop by the Tortugranja turtle sanctuary or grab fresh seafood by the beach. Once night falls, soak in those dreamy sunset views at Punta Sur.

You can spend your days snorkeling, beach hopping, or shopping—or grab drinks at iconic spots like Coco Bongo. The best part? It’s considered one of the safest areas in Cancun for tourists. The whole zone is super well-maintained and heavily patrolled.
Overall, this destination is designed to provide a relaxing and stress-free experience. To make your trip as peaceful as possible, I recommend staying in the Hotel Zone and avoiding the surrounding areas. Like anywhere else, though, stay aware and protect your belongings.
Mérida
Mérida is one of those hidden gems that totally steals your heart. This colorful city in the Yucatán state is full of charm, history, and major cultural vibes. Wander past gorgeous colonial buildings, shop the lively markets, or snack on authentic Yucatecan eats (hello, conchinita pibil!).
There are even free concerts and dance shows in Plaza Grande most nights. If you’re up for adventure, cenotes and ancient Mayan Ruins (like Chichen Itza) are just a short drive away.
Mérida also happens to be known as one of the safest cities in Mexico. Stick to busy areas at night and keep an eye on your stuff, and you’re golden.
Bacalar
Bacalar is seriously a little slice of heaven on Earth. They call it the “Lagoon of Seven Colors” for a reason—the water is every shade of blue you can imagine. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, soak up the sunshine, and just float your worries away.
You can kayak or sail along the lagoon, swim at Pirate’s Channel, and snap dreamy pics that’ll totally blow up your Insta. The town itself is super easygoing. It’s adorned with cute casitas, cozy eco-lodges, and local spots serving fresh, Maya-inspired eats.
With low crime rates, Bacalar is also known for being a really safe and welcoming place. Just use common sense at night, and enjoy!
Puerto Vallarta
