Where to Stay in Bardstown, KY

Before we dive into the options, it helps to get your bearings. Bardstown is located in the heart of Kentucky and makes for an easy day trip or weekend getaway from cities like Louisville or Lexington. It’s small enough to explore on foot if you’re staying near the town center, but big enough that a quick drive puts you close to top attractions and distilleries. Whether you want to be right in the middle of the action or prefer something more peaceful and tucked away, knowing the layout helps make planning your trip smoother.

Where Is Bardstown KY Located?

Bardstown is about a 45-minute drive south of Louisville in Nelson County. So it’s a super convenient and scenic spot to base yourself for bourbon adventures. It’s surrounded by rolling countryside, postcard-worthy farmland, and—most importantly—some of the most iconic distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. You’re perfectly positioned for tastings, tours, and relaxing evenings downtown.

What is Bardstown KY Famous For?

Bardstown proudly holds the title of “Bourbon Capital of the World,” and for good reason. With deep roots in the bourbon industry, it’s home to some of the oldest and most iconic distilleries in the U.S. (think: Heaven Hill, Willett, Barton 1792, and more). Beyond bourbon, Bardstown is also known for My Old Kentucky Home State Park, charming historic architecture, and events like the annual Kentucky Bourbon Festival. Don’t miss a visit to the Old Talbott Tavern. It claims to be the oldest bourbon bar in the country and has stories dating all the way back to the 1700s.

What Are The Best Places To Stay In Bardstown KY?

Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Bardstown, whether you’re in town for a weekend getaway or planning a full Kentucky Bourbon Trail itinerary.

Talbot Inn

The Talbott Inn is right in the heart of downtown Bardstown and full of history and charm. Housed in an 18th-century building, it’s the kind of place that gives you all the vintage vibes without sacrificing comfort. The inn sits directly on Court Square and is just steps from the famous Old Talbott Tavern (the oldest bourbon bar in the world!) So if you’re looking for a stay that truly feels like Bardstown, this is it.

The rooms are uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and are named after some of the famous guests who’ve stayed there over the years, including the Jesse James room (where we stayed!) and the Lincoln Room. Each one is styled to reflect its namesake, which makes the stay feel that much more personal. If you’re looking for something more modern, they also offer a newer wing with updated standard rooms. Those are great if you want a more streamlined setup while still enjoying a central, historic location.

It’s walkable to all of downtown’s restaurants, bourbon bars, and shops. And I’ve stayed here twice now—it’s a favorite I keep coming back to. Whether you’re planning a bourbon weekend or just want to soak up the small-town charm, The Talbott Inn is a fantastic home base.

Bourbon Manor

If you’re looking for something upscale and romantic, Bourbon Manor is such a gem. Just a short walk from downtown, this bed and breakfast is set in two beautifully restored manors and a smokehouse, all tucked into a private, wooded setting. It feels like a peaceful retreat, but you’re still minutes from Bardstown’s main attractions and distilleries.

Each of the rooms is spacious, full of charm, and named after classic bourbon cocktails—think Mint Julep, Sweet Old Fashioned, and Hotty Toddy—which is such a fun touch for a trip to bourbon country. A full homemade breakfast is served each morning. And there’s a bourbon bar on-site if you want to wind down with a nightcap. You can even book spa services or enjoy live music in the piano lounge on select evenings. It’s cozy, romantic, and the perfect place to unwind between tastings.

Jailer’s Inn

This one is a true Bardstown experience. Jailer’s Inn is a historic bed and breakfast that used to be—you guessed it—an actual jail! It served as the Old Nelson County Jail from 1797 to 1987 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Located just half a block from Court Square, it’s within easy walking distance to bourbon bars, local restaurants, boutique shops, and all the downtown happenings.

Each room is unique, filled with antique touches and vintage charm. And the history of the building really comes through in the details. The real standout is the “Jail Cell” room with its original steel door, exposed stone, and bunk beds. It makes for such a fun and memorable stay. Whether you’re a history buff or just want a quirky place to stay, this is one spot that always sparks conversation over breakfast.

Bardstown Motor Lodge

The Bardstown Motor Lodge has quickly become one of the more stylish and modern places to stay in town. It’s got a retro-inspired vibe with a clean, contemporary twist. Picture mid-century-style rooms that open to a central courtyard, with plenty of outdoor space to relax. There are fire pits, lounge chairs, and even a seasonal pool that’s perfect when the weather’s warm. Inside, you’ll find a fun rec room for post-distillery hangs. And an inviting lobby that makes it feel more like a boutique stay than your typical motel. Plus, the location is super convenient. You’re just minutes from downtown Bardstown and right in the heart of bourbon country. This makes it a great home base for your trip.
