From picture-perfect beaches to rich culture and warm, welcoming locals, it’s no surprise the Bahamas is on so many travel bucket lists and is considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I have experienced this slice of paradise firsthand, and trust me, it was everything I dreamed of and more. Whether you’re after the iconic pink sand beaches or hoping to swim with pigs in the Exuma Cays, there’s something for everyone here. In this guide, I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan your perfect Bahamian getaway.

How to Plan a Trip to the Bahamas

Step 1: How to Choose Bahamas Island

The Bahamas isn’t just one place. It’s an entire collection of islands, each offering its own unique charm. Whether you want a resort-style escape or a more serene, off-the-beaten-path experience, choosing the right island will set the tone for your entire trip.

Nassau & Paradise Island: The Heart of the Bahamas

If you’re looking for a lively, resort-filled experience, Nassau and Paradise Island should be at the top of your list. Nassau is the bustling capital of The Bahamas, with a mix of history, culture, and modern amenities. Think shopping at the Straw Market, exploring historic forts, and dancing the night away in vibrant clubs. Just a short bridge away, Paradise Island is home to the iconic Atlantis Resort, complete with a water park, casinos, and more. This area is perfect for families, honeymooners, or anyone seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Exuma Cays: Nature Lovers & Adventurers Unite

For those who want to fully immerse themselves in nature, the Exuma Cays is where you’ll want to be. With over 365 islands to explore, the Exumas are a dream come true for adventure-seekers. Snorkel in blue holes, swim with pigs (yes, it’s really a thing!), and enjoy the peace and solitude only found in these untouched waters. Nature lovers will be in awe of Exuma National Park, a true hidden gem.

Harbour Island: Serenity and Charm

If you’re after something quaint and laid-back, look no further than Harbour Island. Known for its famous pink sand beaches, this island exudes a magical, romantic vibe perfect for couples or anyone in need of some rest and relaxation. Think boutique-style hotels, cozy beachside dinners, and some of the most stunning sunsets you’ll ever see.

The Out Islands: Escape the Crowds & Discover True Paradise

If you’re all about getting off the beaten path and experiencing the true essence of the Bahamas, the Out Islands are your ticket. Islands like Long Island, Andros, and Eleuthera offer untouched nature, quiet beaches, and a real taste of local culture. No crowds, no rush—just you and the serene beauty of the Bahamas.

Step 2: Choose Where To Stay In The Bahamas

Now that you’ve picked your dream island, it’s time to figure out where you’re going to rest your head after a day of exploring. From luxury resorts to cozy beach houses, the Bahamas has it all.

Resorts and Hotels

In Nassau and Paradise Island, there’s no shortage of luxury resorts. Atlantis is, of course, an iconic spot (Holiday In The Sun, anyone?), but for a more intimate experience, check out places like Graycliff Hotel or The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort. Both offer top-tier service and stunning views.

A personal favorite spot I have stayed is the Sandals Royal Bahemian. This all-inclusive resort offers the perfect balance of luxury and relaxation, and it’s where the large majority my photos in this post were taken.

For a more low-key vibe, Harbour Island offers beautiful boutique hotels, like The Dunmore and Pink Sands Resort, where you’ll wake up to the sound of the waves lapping at the shore.

Vacation Rentals

If you’re craving more privacy, vacation rentals are a great way to go. Whether you’re on the Exumas or one of the Out Islands, you’ll find spacious beach houses and villas that allow you to live like a local. Plus, having your own kitchen means you can whip up your own tropical meals whenever you feel like it.

All-Inclusive Packages

For those who want the convenience of everything included, many resorts offer all-inclusive packages. These deals can cover meals, drinks, and activities, meaning you won’t have to worry about extra costs while you’re soaking up the Bahamian sun.

Step 3: How to Book a Flight to The Bahamas

Booking a flight to the Bahamas is pretty simple, thanks to several international airports across the islands. The main airport is Lynden Pindling International (NAS) in Nassau, which serves as a hub to get to other islands. This is the largest airport in the Bahamas and an international gateway into the country.

Direct Flights vs. Connecting Flights

If you’re flying from the U.S., direct flights from cities like Miami, New York, and Orlando are your best bet. These tend to be the most affordable and quickest options. For travelers coming from further away, connecting flights are usually the way to go.

Heading to the Exumas or Out Islands?

If you’re flying to one of the Exuma Islands or the Out Islands, you’ll likely need a connecting flight from Nassau. Don’t worry though, there are plenty of regional flights available. If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule chartering a private flight is always an option.

Tips for Booking Flights

  • Book early: Flights to the Bahamas can fluctuate in price, so locking in your tickets ahead of time will help you get the best deal.
  • Flexibility is key: If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you might score a cheaper fare.
  • Check for travel packages: Some resorts offer flight + accommodation bundles that can help you save money and simplify the booking process.

Step 4: Plan Activities to Do in The Bahamas

Alright, now that you’ve got your island picked, your stay sorted, and a flight booked, it’s time to dive into the fun stuff—what to do once you’re in the Bahamas! Whether you’re all about the beaches, seeking out local culture, or ready for a bit of adventure, there’s no shortage of amazing activities to fill your days.

Chill on the Beaches

The Bahamas is world-famous for its beaches, and believe me, they live up to the hype. Picture yourself lounging on the iconic pink sand beaches of Harbour Island, where the sand has a soft blush hue that’s almost unreal. Or head to Nassau’s Cable Beach for crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming. Whether you’re soaking up the sun, paddling in the shallows, or just staring at the endless horizon, these beaches are pure paradise.

Swim with Pigs in the Exuma Cays

Ready for a one-of-a-kind experience? The Exuma Cays are home to some of the most adorable swimming pigs you’ll ever meet. Yes, you read that right! Hop on a boat tour to one of the remote islands where these friendly pigs take a dip in the crystal-clear waters with you. It’s an unforgettable experience you’ll be talking about for years.

Explore the Bahamas’ Blue Holes

The Bahamas is home to some of the most stunning underwater landscapes, and the blue holes are a must-see for anyone who loves the ocean. These natural underwater sinkholes are perfect for snorkeling or diving. The cool, crystal-clear waters reveal a whole world of marine life and awe-inspiring rock formations.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

You can’t visit the Bahamas without sampling the local cuisine, and there’s one dish that stands above the rest: conch salad. Made fresh with conch, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and a tangy lime dressing, it’s a must-try on every Bahamian trip. Head to one of the island’s lively fish fry spots to indulge in this delicious treat alongside other local specialties like fried fish and crack conch. Arawak Cay in Nassau is one of the most popular places to grab a plate—good food, great atmosphere, and the perfect way to enjoy a true Bahamian experience.

If you’re looking for a unique spot to grab a local craft cocktail, I highly recommend Bon Vivants in Nassau! This was a short drive from our resort and one of the highlights of that trip for sure.

Dance the Night Away

When the sun sets, the Bahamas truly comes alive with its vibrant music dance scene. Whether you’re at a local bar or an upscale resort on Paradise Island, you’ll find live bands playing everything from calypso to reggae, and Bahamian rhythms that will get you moving. Join in on the fun and let the island vibes take over. It’s a perfect way to experience the culture and energy of the islands.

Adventure at the National Parks

For those who love the outdoors, a visit to one of the Bahamas’ national parks is a must. From the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park to the West Side National Park, these protected areas showcase the incredible biodiversity of the islands. Hike through lush trails, discover secluded beaches, or simply enjoy the serenity and natural beauty around you.

Take a Boat Tour

A boat tour around the Bahamas is one of the best ways to explore its untouched beauty. Cruise through the Exuma Cays, stopping at hidden beaches, isolated islands, and pristine waters. You might even get the chance to snorkel at a private blue hole or discover secluded coves that are straight out of a postcard. Whether you’re hopping from island to island or cruising at sunset, a boat tour is an experience you’ll cherish.

General Tips for Your Bahamas Adventure

  • Pack light: The weather is warm year-round, so go for light, breathable clothing. Don’t forget sunscreen, your favorite swimsuit, and a hat to keep the sun at bay.
  • Local transportation: In Nassau and Paradise Island, taxis and buses are easy to find. On smaller islands, you might want to rent a scooter or bike, or even take a boat ride to explore.
  • Taste the local flavor: You must try conch salad while you’re here. It’s a Bahamian delicacy you won’t want to miss!
  • Explore the blue holes: The Bahamas’ blue holes are otherworldly, so be sure to take time to explore these natural wonders, especially if you love snorkeling or diving.
  • Embrace island life: The Bahamas is all about relaxation, so take it slow and enjoy.

The Bahamas is a dream vacation come true. With a little planning—like choosing the right island, finding the perfect stay, and booking your flight early—you’ll be on your way to one of the best trips of your life.
