You will never catch me on a road trip without a sweater or some kind of layer. Someone always has a strong preference for the climate, and being too cold (or too hot) in a small space for hours can be miserable.
Plus, a good oversized sweater doubles as a pillow when you need to rest your head against the window. Road trip hack of the century, honestly.
Prioritize wrinkle-free fabrics.
After a long drive, wrinkled clothes are basically a given, especially pants or skirts. And if you’re anything like me and actually notice things like that, choosing the right fabric makes a big difference.
My go-to fabrics for road trips are merino wool, polyester blends, jersey, nylon, knits, and cotton blends. They hold up well on long drives, stay wrinkle-resistant, and are almost always comfortable to sit in for hours.

This is my go-to for summer road trips when I want to look put-together without actually trying that hard.
Start with high-waisted cotton shorts and a fitted tank or bralette. Then, layer an oversized cotton button-down over it and wear it open or with a casual half-tuck for a little shape. Finish it off with white sneakers, oversized sunglasses, and a canvas tote.
It’s breathable, comfortable, and just effortlessly chic. And honestly? Soft cotton textures photograph so well, which is a major bonus when you’re pulling over for spontaneous coffee stops.

This is literally everything I want in a fall road trip outfit. It’s cozy, easy, and still pulled together at every stop along the way.
Throw on tailored trousers or ribbed knit pants and a fitted long-sleeve tee as your base. Then layer an off-the-shoulder knit sweater, slightly tucking it to maintain a little shape. Ankle boots that slip on and off easily are a must, and don’t forget a lightweight scarf for extra warmth.

Layer a chunky turtleneck sweater over a structured t-shirt, then add a relaxed wool coat on top. Finish with comfortable slip-ons like these Uggs, a scarf, and a beanie.
