Getting ready for a trip means one thing: cute new outfits for every photo-op. And let’s be real, most of my outfits aren’t complete without a matching hat. Whether it’s to keep the sun off your face or just to complete your vacay aesthetic, a good hat for travel is a must. But figuring out how to pack it? That’s where it gets tricky.
I’ve definitely carried my bigger felt hats onto planes as my personal item like precious cargo, and I’ve even gone as far as considering a hat box, but sometimes it just makes more sense to pack them in your suitcase. The catch? You’ve gotta do it the right way. Packing your hat without ruining the shape or structure is 100% a skill, and lucky for you, I’m about to break down exactly how to pack a hat in a suitcase depending on the type of hat you’re bringing. Let’s get into the art of hat packing, shall we?

How to Pack a Baseball Hat in a Suitcase
A baseball hat is a total travel essential, especially if you’re heading somewhere adventurous like Costa Rica. It’s perfect for keeping the sun out of your eyes during hikes or for those travel days when dry shampoo just isn’t cutting it we’ve all been there. The good news? Packing a baseball cap in your suitcase is way easier than you think!
Step 1: Place the hat upside down in the suitcase.
Pick a cozy little spot in your suitcase to nest your hat. Place it upside down and let it chill there while you pack around it.
Step 2:Fill the hat.
With your baseball cape upside down, stuff the hat’s crown with smaller items like socks or undies to help it hold its shape.
Step 3: Cushion around the hat.
Gently pack clothes around the hat to cushion the brim and crown. Just make sure you don’t stack anything heavy on top, so your hat doesn’t get crushed or lose its shape mid-flight.

How to Pack a Beach Hat in a Suitcase
There’s nothing better than arriving at a tropical beach like in the Bahamas with the perfect beach hat. Whether you’re lounging with a book, strolling the shoreline, or dipping your toes in the ocean, these wide-brimmed hats will keep the sun off your face all day long. And the best part? Packing that much-needed hat is way easier than you think!
Step 1: Pick the right suitcase.
First things first your suitcase needs to be big enough to actually fit your beach hat without folding or smashing it. If it’s too small, your hat’s shape might not survive the trip.
Step 2: Place the hat upside down in the suitcase.
Make sure your hat is completely dry before packing it trust me, you don’t want the rest of your clothes smelling funky due to mildew. Once it’s dry, flip it upside down and place it in a little nest you’ve made between clothes inside your suitcase.
Step 3: Add some cushion.
Stuff the crown with soft items like swimsuits, underwear, or t-shirts to help protect your hat and hold its shape. Then, add more clothes around the sides of the hat so it doesn’t get bent or folded during travel.
Step 4: Keep the brim flat.
To protect the brim, slide a few items underneath it to keep it flat. The goal here is to give it support from below so it stays nice and smooth on top.

How to Pack a Cowboy Hat in a Suitcase
Planning a trip to Nashville or heading out to a ranch getaway in Texas? You know you’ll want to bring home a cute cowboy hat as the ultimate souvenir. And yes, you can totally get it home in one piece.
Step 1: Flip the hat upside down.
Notice a trend here? Start by creating a soft little nest in your suitcase using clothes you’ve already packed. Then, place your cowboy hat upside down right into that space. This helps protect the crown and keep its shape intact.
Step 2: Cushion inside and around the hat.
Stuff the inside of the crown with soft clothing, like t-shirts, PJs, or even socks. Then pad around the sides of the hat with more clothes so it doesn’t shift or get squished during travel.
Step 3: Support the brim.
To keep the brim flat and flawless, tuck a few items under it for support. You want it to rest evenly so it doesn’t get bent or creased.
How to Pack a Floppy Hat in a Suitcase
Floppy hats are a total fashion moment perfect for lounging poolside at a luxury resort or strolling along white sandy beaches. But let’s be real: packing them can feel a bit intimidating because of their size and shape.
Step 1: Fold it gently.
Most floppy hats are super flexible, which makes them perfect for travel. Start by folding the brim and crown in half. Don’t worry if it looks a little squished it’ll bounce back once you unpack it and let it rest.
Step 2: Roll the hat up tightly.
Next, roll the hat up tightly (just like I always recommend with clothes) to save space. Floppy hats are made for this kind of thing!
Step 3: Place it in a suitcase and cushion around it.
Tuck your rolled-up hat into a secure spot in your suitcase and cushion it with soft items like clothes or a travel towel. This keeps it protected and stops it from unraveling mid-flight.

How to Pack a Straw Hat in a Suitcase
Straw hats are a vacation must they’re cute, they’re functional, and they totally complete your outfit. I received a free customized one during our honeymoon from the resort and I was super nervous about how it would make it home with us after. Whether you’ve got a structured one or a floppier style, packing it the right way keeps it looking fabulous until you arrive.
Step 1: Nest it upside down.
Create a little “hat nest” in your suitcase using soft clothing you’ve already packed. Place your straw hat upside down so the crown is cradled and supported.
Step 2: Add some cushion.
Stuff the inside of the crown with socks, swimsuits, or rolled-up tees to help it hold its shape. Then, gently pack items around the outside for extra protection.
Step 3: Skip the plastic.
Don’t wrap your straw hat in a plastic bag, even if you’re tempted. If there’s any wet or damp items in your suitcase (which I really don’t recommend!), plastic can trap it and mess with the straw’s shape and texture. Keep it dry always!
Step 4: Keep it pressure-free.
Last tip: Avoid placing anything heavy on top of your hat. You want to protect the brim and keep the shape intact, not flatten it mid-flight.
