Planning our trip to Greece was one of my favorite parts of the whole experience, especially once we started narrowing down which Greek islands we actually wanted to visit and funny enough, Mykonos was almost the one that didn’t make the cut. Looking back that would’ve been one of the biggest mistakes because Mykonos ended up being our favorite stop in Greece, which I definitely wasn’t expecting.

Like a lot of people, I mostly associated Mykonos with beach clubs, DJs by the pool, and a HUGE party scene. Which, don’t get me wrong, looks very fun and all, but just visiting as a couple in our thirties it just wasn’t the vibe we were looking for on this trip. We almost convinced ourselves that two nights would be more than enough or that maybe we should skip it altogether and spend more time somewhere else (because that’s a lot of the advice I read online had to say about it!) and honestly that would have been a tragedy.

How balanced it felt there is what really surprised us after arriving. Yes, there are beautiful beach clubs and lively cocktail bars, but there are also quiet mornings, incredible restaurants, gorgeous sunsets, and SO many moments that had nothing to do with the bougie party reputation it’s famous for. So if you’re wondering how many days in Mykonos is enough to plan into your trip, here’s what I learned after visiting for myself.

How Many Days in Mykonos Is Enough?

For our first visit, we spent three nights in Mykonos after four nights in Santorini and before heading back to Athens, and looking back I genuinely believe it was the perfect amount of time.

Originally, we almost only did two nights because we assumed we’d do one beach club, one night out, see the windmills, and call it a successful visit. I am so glad we gave ourselves the extra day to fit in some pure exploring time because there ended up being so much more to Mykonos than we expected.

Three nights gave us enough time to spend an afternoon at Branco Beach Club, spend a pool day at Cavo Tagoo, wander around Mykonos Town without feeling rushed, enjoy sunset dinner and drinks, and somehow turn our after-dinner cocktails into full evenings more than once (okay, every night). We had time to grab pastries and coffee from Hibiscus and Gioras Wood Medieval Bakery in the mornings, sit at bars longer than we intended to and just soak in the atmosphere instead of constantly checking the time.

Could I have stayed longer? Absolutely. But for a first trip to Greece and as part of a larger island-hopping itinerary, I thought three nights struck a really nice balance.

Photos we captured wandering Mykonos Town during the early morning because the crowds came out.

Where Is Mykonos Greece

Mykonos is located in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea and is one of the most popular Greek islands to include on a trip to Greece. It’s easy to reach from Athens by plane or ferry, which is one of the reasons so many people pair it with islands like Santorini. Our itinerary ended up being flying into Athens, flight to Santorini, ferry to Mykonos, and then ferry back to Athens before flying home, and hto be honest I loved the order we chose. Starting with four nights in Santorini, then spending three nights in Mykonos before ending with a couple days in Athens felt like a really nice pace for our first visit.

Something that we realized while planning is that transportation days take more time and energy than you expect. Flights, ferries, hotel check-ins, all of it adds up, which is why I always tell people not to try and cram too many islands into one trip. Giving yourself enough time to actually enjoy each destination makes such a difference.

Is Mykonos Worth Visiting

Absolutely, and I say that as someone who almost didn’t visit Mykonos at all. Before our trip, I mostly pictured expensive luxury hotels, crowded beach clubs, and nonstop nightlife. While all of those things absolutely exist, what surprised me most was just how much more personality the island has beyond that.

I still remember arriving at our hotel in Mykonos Town, Little Venice Suites, and opening the balcony doors for the first time. We had a direct view of the windmills, the waves below, and Veranda Bar right underneath our room. They had music playing all afternoon, starting with Frank Sinatra and working their way into classics for sunset, and before we’d even unpacked I remember thinking “Okay I get it now.”

To this day, I’m still trying to track down that exact playlist since they played it each afternoon while I got ready for the evening. I may or may not have searched Spotify for a Veranda Bar playlist and even messaged them directly on Instagram asking if they’d share it with me. The search continues.

Yes, Mykonos can be expensive. And yes, if you’re looking for beach clubs and nightlife, you’ll definitely find them. But if you’re like us and want something a little slower mixed in with all of that, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Apparently, we were Mykonos people all along.

How Many Days Do You Need In Mykonos Greece

The number of days you need in Mykonos really comes down to your travel style and what kind of experience you’re looking for. While I personally loved our three nights, I could easily see why some people stay longer and others only stop by for a couple days.

Two to Three Days

If you’re visiting Mykonos as part of a larger trip to Greece, I think 2 to 3 days works really well (although I do lean heavily towards 3 if you can). This gives you enough time to wander through Mykonos Town, spend an afternoon at a beach club, and enjoy a few late nights that somehow start with “just one drink” and end a couple hours later.

You’ll have time to visit some of the most popular beaches in Mykonos, like Paradise Beach or Ornos Beach, enjoy dinner in Little Venice, and get a feel for what makes the island so special. It will be a little faster paced, but if you’re island hopping, this is a really solid amount of time.

Four to Five Days

For most travelers, I think 4 to 5 days is probably the sweet spot, especially for those looking to slow down an relax. This gives you enough time to really experience both sides of the island. You can spend your mornings exploring Mykonos Town before it gets crowded, enjoy lazy afternoons by the pool or beach, and have plenty of time for sunset dinners and cocktail bars without feeling like you’re constantly on the go. It also leaves room for some of the bigger unique experiences, like a day trip to the Island of Delos. As the mythical birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the most important historical sites in Greece and something I would love to do on a future visit.

And of course, this gives you more opportunities to experience places like 180 Sunset Bar and Negrita, which I still don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from.

Week +

If slower travel is your thing, or if Mykonos is the main event and not just one stop on your itinerary, a week or more would be incredibly easy to fill. This gives you time to revisit your favorite spots, try more restaurants, spend multiple days at the beach, and really explore the island beyond Mykonos Town. Renting a car or ATV also becomes more appealing when you have extra time and want to venture farther out. You could even split your trip up by staying at a beach club for part of it and staying in Mykonos Town. Honestly, I don’t think I’d have any trouble filling a week here.

At the end of the day, Mykonos can be whatever you want it to be. A quick stop, a fun weekend, or a slower, more immersive stay. But for most first-time visitors, somewhere around 3 days feels like a really nice balance.

One quick tip, if you’re already planning outfits (because let’s be honest, Mykonos is one of those places where everyone suddenly becomes much more fashionable), I also put together a guide on What to Wear in Greece to help with packing.

What To Do In Mykonos Greece

Spend a Day at a Beach Club

If there is one thing Mykonos is famous for, it’s beach clubs. For a lot of people, this is the main reason they visit Mykonos, and after experiencing one for ourselves, I do finally understand the appeal. We spent an afternoon at Branco Beach Club and absolutely loved it. Great food, amazing drinks, comfortable sunbeds, and just enough music and atmosphere without feeling like we were at an all-day party. It felt lively and fun, but still relaxed enough that we could easily spend hours there.

If you’re heading to Mykonos specifically for the party scene, you’ll definitely find plenty of options. Paradise Beach is where some of the island’s most famous beach clubs are, while Psarou Beach is known for luxury spots like Nammos. Scorpios is probably one of the most popular & exclusive sunset destinations in Mykonos, and Principote is another favorite for those looking for a more upscale experience (unfortunately, it was already closed for the season during our visit, which was a bummer, because all the videos I’ve seen online give off a very Mama Mia vibe with all the ABBA on their playlist.)

Even if beach parties aren’t really your thing, I’d still recommend dedicating one day to the experience. It’s such a huge part of the island’s personality!

Wander Mykonos Town

When we visited Mykonos for the first time, we stayed at Little Venice Suites in Mykonos Town so we were able to explore the town at all different times of the day. If there’s one thing I think everyone should do, it’s simply wander around Mykonos Town. The whitewashed buildings, colorful doors, and beautiful Cycladic architecture are exactly what you picture when you think of the Greek islands, and getting a little lost is honestly part of the fun.

Beyond the boutique shops and cafés, you’ll also stumble across iconic spots like Panagia Paraportiani Church, Little Venice, and plenty of postcard-worthy corners that make this part of the island so special. I would give yourself at least a couple of hours here, although somehow we kept finding ourselves wandering around town all throughout our trip.

Watch Sunset at 180 Sunset Bar

Out of everything we did in Greece, 180 Sunset Bar may have been my absolute favorite experience. Seriously.

We booked our reservation for the lower level (their website let’s you view all the spots in 3D before reserving!) and made it a point to arrive right when they opened to secure a front row table. Best decision ever. The views are incredible, but it’s really the atmosphere that makes this place so special. The music, cocktails, and energy all come together to create one of the most memorable evenings from our entire trip. The staff is incredible and makes sure everyone is seating right at the height of sunset (which they have music perfectly timed up for). It was genuinely the prettiest sunset I have ever seen and I honestly don’t know if anything will ever top this experience for me.

Visit the Windmills

The iconic windmills at Kato Mili are one of those places you simply can’t miss. Located right next to Little Venice (and in view from our hotel!), they’re one of the most recognizable landmarks in Mykonos and make an easy stop while exploring town.

While they’re beautiful at sunset, I actually loved seeing them in the early mornings the most when everything felt a little quieter. Since we stayed in Mykonos Town we were able to visit the windmills at each time of day. The mornings were the most peaceful and pretty much had them all to ourselves. The windmills got progressively busier throughout the day with sunset obviously being the busiest time.

Relax by the Pool

Not every day in Mykonos needs to be packed with plans (no matter how much I enjoy filling my itinerary spreadsheet). I think building in some slower moments makes the trip so much more enjoyable.

One of my favorite afternoons was spent at Cavo Tagoo. Between the infinity pool, poolside pizza and cocktails, and views overlooking the Old Port, it was one of those places where we’d glance around and couldn’t believe we were really here. Not exactly a bad problem to have.

Explore the Island

Even after three nights, I left feeling like there was still so much more to see. If you’re staying longer, renting a car or ATV makes it easy to explore the island beyond Mykonos Town. Places like the Armenistis Lighthouse and the Archaeological Museum are high on my list for a future visit, and I’d also love to take a day trip to the Island of Delos. Known as the mythical birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece. Most visitors go with a tour guide, and I think it would add such a unique cultural side to the trip next time.

Looking back, I still laugh a little (or a lot) at the fact that we almost skipped Mykonos altogether. Turns out the island we gave the least amount of thought to while planning ended up becoming our favorite stop in Greece and I definitely wasn’t expecting that.

Three nights ended up being the perfect amount of time for our first visit. It gave us enough time to experience the beach clubs, wander around Mykonos Town, enjoy way more cocktails than originally planned, and settle into the slower pace that we ended up loving so much. If I ever make it back (which I really hope I do), I’d probably add another night or two just to have more time to soak it all in.
