There’s just something about Christmas that hits different, isn’t there? The music, the Christmas lights, cozy nights, and that first cup of hot cocoa when the air turns crisp. It all feels like pure joy wrapped up with a bow. It’s hands down one of my favorite times of the year. Every city sparkles a little brighter, every playlist sounds happier, and suddenly, even running errands feels festive (trust me, I “run errands” more often just to see all the festive stuff in stores!)
What I love most about the holiday season is how it brings out the best in people. There’s laughter, kindness, and excitement in the air, and a million little traditions that make it feel special every single year. From tree lightings and ice skating to holiday movies and baking marathons, there are so many fun things to do that you just can’t replicate any other time of year.
That’s why I’ve put together this ultimate Christmas bucket list packed with festive ideas to help you soak up the season, make new memories, and enjoy every twinkly, tinsel-covered moment. Whether you’re staying close to home or planning a holiday getaway, these ideas will make this Christmas your most magical one yet.
Christmas Bucket List
Before we dive in, let’s talk about what makes Christmas so special. It’s not just the gifts or the glitter (though those are fun too), it’s the feeling. The cozy togetherness, the nostalgia, and that little spark of wonder that never really goes away, no matter how old you are.
This post is all about capturing that feeling and turning it into memories. I’m sharing the sweetest, coziest, most joy-filled things to do this holiday season, so you can slow down, soak it in, and celebrate the best parts of Christmas.

What Makes Christmas So Special
The Traditions
From hanging stockings to decorating the tree, the little rituals we repeat every year are what make Christmas feel like home. It’s the smell of cookies baking, the sound of carols playing, and the simple comfort of doing something familiar with the people you love.
The Atmosphere
Nowhere else do lights sparkle brighter, or smiles come easier, than during December. Whether it’s a bustling city street or a small-town square, everything feels softer, cozier, and more full of life. It’s like the whole world takes a deep breath and collectively decides to believe in a little magic again.
The Togetherness
Let’s be honest, half the fun of Christmas is the people you share it with. Family, friends, pets in festive sweaters, it’s all about connection. Even if you’re spending it somewhere new, there’s something about this time of year that makes it easier to slow down and be present.
What To Do For Christmas
1. Decorate Your Home (and Then Add More Lights)
Go all out. I’m talking twinkle lights, garlands, stockings, the works. Put on a Christmas playlist, make some hot cocoa, and turn decorating into an event. The cozier, the better, and yes, it’s impossible to have too many lights.

2. Bake Christmas Cookies
It’s not Christmas without sugar cookies covered in icing or gingerbread people with crooked smiles. Growing up, this was one of my favorite family traditions. We always made a whole day of it with frosting everywhere, too many sprinkles, and plenty of taste-testing along the way.

3. Watch Christmas Movies (Preferably in Christmas Pajamas)
Christmas Vacation (my family’s favorite), Elf, Home Alone, The Grinch, there’s no wrong choice here. Make it a movie marathon night with popcorn, peppermint bark, and fuzzy socks. Bonus points if you can quote the lines word for word.
4. Go Ice Skating
Whether it’s at Rockefeller Center or a small-town local rink, there’s something so magical about gliding (or wobbling) across the ice surrounded by lights and music. Don’t forget the post-skate hot chocolate, it’s basically a requirement.

5. Visit a Christmas Market
Nothing captures the holiday spirit quite like strolling through a Christmas market with a mug of mulled wine in hand. Handmade ornaments, twinkly lights, and the smell of roasted nuts? Yes, please.

6. See a Tree Lighting Ceremony
Find a local one or, if you’re near one, catch a big-city event. Watching a massive Chrstimas tree light up never gets old, it’s pure joy in one sparkling moment.
7. Go Christmas Lights Hunting
Load up the car, make a holiday playlist, grab some cocoa, and drive around looking at neighborhood lights. My family used to do this every year, whether through a neighborhood or a formal installation. We even take our dogs around town for this now, and it’s one of those simple traditions that never loses its charm.

8. Build a Gingerbread House
Whether it collapses halfway through or ends up Pinterest-worthy, building a gingerbread house is pure fun. Make it competitive with voting on the best one or just see who can fit the most candy on the roof before it caves in.
9. Host a Holiday Party or Game Night
Invite friends or family, make a festive snack board, and get cozy. Whether it’s trivia, charades, or a White Elephant gift exchange, laughter is guaranteed.

10. Attend a Holiday Show
From The Nutcracker to a local choir concert, live performances add so much holiday magic. Dress up a little and make it a festive night out. One year we attended Lindsey Stirling’s Snow Waltz tour (highly recommend!), and it was the perfect festive way to kick off the holiday season.

11. Have a Christmas Photo Shoot and Send Christmas Cards
Break out the matching pajamas or the ugly sweaters and snap some photos. Whether it’s a professional shoot or a self-timer situation, it’s the perfect way to capture the memories.

12. Volunteer or Donate
The season of giving isn’t just about presents. Volunteer at a local shelter, donate to a toy drive, or even just drop off cookies for your neighbors. It’s one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate.
13. Wrap Gifts Like a Pro
Skip the gift bags and make wrapping presents it’s own fun and festive event with holiday music, ribbons, fancy paper, maybe even a little wine. There’s something oddly satisfying about making each gift look as special as what’s inside.

14. Plan a Cozy Christmas Getaway
If you’ve ever dreamed of a cabin in the mountains, a snowy lodge, or even a beachy Christmas escape, make it happen. A change of scenery can make the season feel extra special.

15. Make a Christmas Craft
Grab some hot cocoa, turn on your favorite Christmas playlist (or Hallmark Christmas movie), and get creative. Whether it’s making DIY ornaments, paintin, or crafting your own wreath, this is one of those cozy, creative activities that makes the season feel extra special. Don’t worry about perfection—it’s all about the fun (and maybe a little glitter explosion). Bonus: you’ll end up with keepsakes to pull out year after year.
I typically try to find a new hobby each holiday season to use as a peaceful outlet between all the chaos. Some of my favorites (that I still love to do) have been macrame ornaments, festive canvases, and painted ornaments.

16. Visit a Local Tree Farm
There’s nothing quite like wandering through rows of evergreens in search of the one. The smell of pine, the sound of saws, and the excitement of strapping your tree to the roof? Instant Christmas movie vibes. Even if you already have a fake tree at home, visiting a local tree farm is a festive day trip worth adding to your list. They usually have much more to do and buy, like activities for kids and wreaths if you aren’t in need of a tree. Plus, it makes for the cutest holiday photos.
17. Make a Christmas Countdown Calendar
Channel your inner kid and create your own advent calendar! You can fill it with chocolates, handwritten notes, date ideas, or little surprises for each day leading up to Christmas. Even if you don’t want to make your own, many stores offer fun themed advent calendars like wine, bourbon, jelly, chocolates and more. It’s such a fun way to stretch the magic of the season, and let’s be honest, we all love having something to look forward to every day in December.
18. Read a Christmas Story by the Tree
When the house is quiet and the tree lights are twinkling, grab a blanket, pour some cocoa (or wine), and cozy up with a Christmas classic. Whether it’s The Night Before Christmas, A Christmas Carol, or even a cheesy holiday rom-com novel (my personal favorite), reading by the glow of the tree is pure seasonal serenity.
19. Make a Festive Holiday Playlist
No Christmas season is complete without the perfect soundtrack. Create your own playlist with all your favorites from classic carols to pop hits, and a little Mariah Carey (because obviously). Play it while baking cookies, wrapping gifts, or dancing around the kitchen.
20. Build a Snowman (Or Have a Snowball Fight)
If you’re lucky enough to get snow in December, bundle up and head outside! Whether you’re sculpting your best Frosty or engaging in an all-out snowball showdown, there’s nothing like acting like a kid again during the holidays. Finish it off with rosy cheeks, warm mittens, and a well-deserved cup of hot cocoa.
