Is Indiana Romantic?
Absolutely! Indiana is incredibly romantic—you just have to know where to look. This state is full of hidden gems and cozy corners perfect for date nights.
Especially in the fall, when the leaves are turning and there’s a chill in the air, places like Eagle Creek Park become the perfect backdrop for a hike or scenic picnic. In the city, bike rides along the Cultural Trail or sunset walks along the Canal Walk bring a sense of adventure and romance without going far. Indiana Date Night Ideas
Here’s a list of fun, charming, and totally memorable date night ideas in Indy to help you plan your next outing:
First Date Ideas Indianapolis
Take a Gondola Ride on the White River
Want to feel like you’re floating through Venice? Book a gondola ride on the White River right downtown! You’ll get a peaceful, scenic cruise through the city’s skyline, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch one of the serenading gondoliers for a truly magical experience.
You can also book paddle boats and more.
Why it’s perfect:
- Private and intimate setting
- Gorgeous sunset views reflecting off the river
- A unique date that feels completely unforgettable
Perfect for anniversaries, proposals, or just because.
Duckpin Bowling
Nothing says flirty fun quite like a night at a duckpin bowling alley. Pins Mechanical Company on Mass Ave has retro vibes, craft cocktails, and all the classic pinball and yard games to keep things playful. Think: pinball machines, ping pong tables, and bocce ball. It’s laid-back, casual, and a great spot if you want to skip the pressure of a formal dinner.
It’s also one of my all time favorite downtown spots! Not only is an extremely fun date night idea, but they also have incredible food and cocktails, making it a great Happy Hour spot. Don’t forget to check out the rooftop patio while you’re there.!
Another spot for duckpin bowling would be Action Duckpin Bowl inside the Fountain Square Theatre Building. It’s a vintage duckpin bowling alley, making you feel like you stepped in a 1950s old film. When we went there, we paired it with going to The Commodore—a super popular speakeasy also located in the Fountain Square Theatre Building.
What to expect:
- Fun, low-key competition
- Plenty of spots to grab a drink afterward
- A great way to kick off a full night exploring Mass Ave or Fountain Square

Dinner and Jazz at The Jazz Kitchen
For a romantic, music-filled evening, head to The Jazz Kitchen. This local staple serves up amazing New Orleans-inspired eats alongside award-winning live jazz music. It’s cozy, intimate, and just buzzing with good energy.
Pro Tip:
- Book your table early for the best seats by the stage
- Try their southern and Midwest-inspired menu and one of their house cocktails
Few things set the mood for a date night idea better than dinner and jazz.
Visit a Speakeasy or Cocktail Bar
Step into the past and enjoy a speakeasy-style night out. These hidden bars are dimly lit, romantic, and perfect for a nightcap after dinner. And while downtown Indy has a lot of cocktail bars, I’ll cover the ones that stand out to me the post.
- Wiseguys: Hidden in the back of Goodfellas Pizza, WiseGuys has the best bourbon selection in town by far. The bartenders even create their own signature cocktails! If you’re looking for a recipe, the Peanut Butter and Jelly shot is a favorite of ours.
- The Exchange: This whiskey and craft cocktail bar has over 220 options, plus a handful of curated shareable plates! It feels sophisticated yet laidback, channeling that speakeasy vibe perfectly.
- Ball & Biscuit: Fresh ingredients and balanced classics are staples of this Mass Ave spot. Inside, the design is moody, relaxing, and equally sophisticated. Even better, it doesn’t have super loud music or flashy TVs—it’s the perfect place to enjoy each other’s company.
- Sundry and Vice: If in-house syrups and fresh juices are your thing, this location is a must-visit. Think 1920s decoration, plush velvet couches, and ultimate hospitality. It blends historic feels with a modern touch perfectly.
- The Inferno Room: This speakeasy-inspired bar goes all out. It’s a traditional tiki bar located in Fountain Square, serving Cuban food and the best cocktails. Whenever I go, the Painkiller and Cuban Sandwich or Spam Fried Rice are must-haves.
Why speakiesies (or any cocktail bar) are perfect for date night:
- Cozy, intimate settings
- Great craft cocktails
- Makes any date night idea feel a little more adventurous

Check Out a Comedy Show at Helium Comedy Club
Need a good laugh? Helium Comedy Club downtown is one of the best places to spend an evening. We visited Helium for Valentine’s Day one year and have made a point to consistently go back since. With both rising stars and well-known comedians, it’s the type of venue everyone can find an act to enjoy.
If you want to enjoy the bar (which you definitely should!), make sure to show up a little early. And as far as food goes, they serve it during the show—so don’t feel like you have to hurry and eat before the main act goes on. Or, to make everything super convenient, you can buy a bundle! This is what we did for Valentine’s Day, and it came with tickets, a bottle of wine, and a charcuterie board.
Make sure to book tickets in advance—this place sells out fast. Also, we haven’t been to an open mic night yet, but it’s next up on our itinerary!
Perfect for:
- Breaking the ice on a first date
- Couples who love to laugh together
Explore the Cultural Trail
Spend a sunny afternoon or a cool evening strolling the Cultural Trail that winds through downtown Indy. Stop for coffee, pop into a gallery, and wander through neighborhoods like Fountain Square and Fletcher Place.
Trail highlights:
- Public art installations
- Unique urban gardens
- Easy access to cafes, breweries, and bakeries
Indianapolis Anniversary Ideas
Romantic Staycation at The Bottleworks Hotel
Nothing beats a luxurious staycation at Bottleworks Hotel on Mass Ave. We loved bringing our dogs (the hotel is pet-friendly!), so Luke and Leia came with us, too. And soaking in the Art Deco design and lively neighborhood right outside our door? Total vibe. If you do decide to stay here, you have to visit Pins Mechanical right across the street for duckpin bowling. It’s like a date night and anniversary trip in one!
Aside from bowling, The Garage Foodhall is also right across the street—perfect for grabbing a casual bite (or three) to eat. Or, if you’re craving a more date-night-dinner, BODHI and The Fountain Room are in close proximity and are two of the best options. (Learn more about both in my post, “Best Restaurants in Indianapolis.” And, if you’re a movie buff, there’s a theater right next to the hotel! Clearly, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do.
Why it’s worth it:
- Pet friendly (huge bonus!)
- Walkable to the Garage Food Hall and tons of bars and shops
- Perfect for feeling like you’ve gone away without actually leaving Indy

Eagle Creek Park
Eagle Creek Park is one of the largest city parks in the country and is perfect for a sunset picnic. It is especially stunning during the fall when all the leaves are changing. You can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, paddle boards, pontoon boats, and more. My personal favorite activity here would be the Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Course.
Best sunset spots:
- The marina overlooking the reservoir
- Scenic hiking trails with autumn foliage
Bring a blanket, pack some local takeout, and enjoy golden hour in nature.

Drive-in Movie Night at Tibbs
Cuddle up at Tibbs Drive-In, where you can watch a double feature from the comfort of your car. There’s just something so nostalgic and cozy about drive-in movies, and Tibbs is a classic Indy favorite. Whether it’s a first date or a long-time tradition, this spot always hits the mark for a low-key, romantic evening.
Pro tips:
- Bring your own snacks and drinks (yes, Tibbs has concessions, but we love a picnic setup)
- Don’t forget cozy blankets and pillows for max comfort
- Arrive early to grab a good spot and enjoy the full experience
Visit Newfields
If you’re looking for a date night that mixes art, nature, and a little bit of magic, Newfields is it! This award-winning museum and garden space has rotating exhibitions, an impressive permanent collection, and stunning grounds to explore year-round.
For those of you new to Indy, Newfields is formally the Indianapolis Museum of Art. And besides its usual art museum, this location also hosts seasonal indoor and outdoor events! I’ve personally attended Art in Bloom, The LUME (a super cool Salvadore Dali exhibit), Winterlights (my family makes a point to visit every year and get dinner after), and Harvest Nights (thousands of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns in the garden!) I have to say, while they’re all incredible, Harvest Nights is definitely my favorite—coming from a girl who loves Halloween.
Some date night ideas while you’re there:
- Wander through the gardens hand-in-hand
- Check out the immersive art installations
- Grab a drink from the beer garden or café
- Visit during seasonal events like Winterlights or the Summer Nights Film Series

Candle Making
Looking for a unique date night idea that’s creative and cozy? Try candle making at either Penn & Beech or Unplug Soy Candles in Fishers! I’m a little partial to the latter, I’ve been going here and using their candles for years. These spots let you and your date pour your own custom candles, choosing from dozens of scents to mix and match.
It’s a great way to create new memories and get a new keepsake! Besides making your own candles, Unplug also has a great shop with tons of fun gift ideas.
Why we love it:
- You get to pick a scent that fits your vibe
- It’s hands-on, interactive, and low-pressure fun
- You walk away with a cute souvenir to remember the night
It’s something different, and honestly, the process is more fun than you might expect. Plus, your place will smell amazing afterward.

Hot Yoga at The Hot Room
This might sound unconventional, but hear me out—hot yoga at The Hot Room is a surprisingly great date idea. It’s energizing, challenging, and something you’ll both feel proud of doing together.
What makes it a great experience:
- Bond over a shared fitness challenge
- Feel totally refreshed and accomplished afterward
- Grab a drink or brunch post-workout (you’ll have earned it!)
Whether you’re yoga pros or total beginners, you’ll leave feeling better than when you walked in, and that’s always a win.
Distillery Tasting at Hotel Tango
Hotel Tango Distillery, located in Fletcher Place (or Fountain Square), offers one of the most laid-back and stylish tasting experiences in the city. This veteran-owned distillery is the perfect place to grab a drink in a rustic-chic setting. More specifically, they have bourbon, gin, and vodka, so everyone’s bound to find something they like.
Here’s why it’s a top date night idea:
- Explore a tasting flight of house-made spirits
- Cozy up in the lounge or on the patio with a craft cocktail
- Enjoy seasonal menus and a friendly, relaxed vibe
It’s a great alternative to your usual bar night and gives you something fun to explore together. And if you end up catching Hotel Tango on a special release night, take it! We went for a tasting event for their whiskey, and it was an unbeatable experience. Beyond this, we especially love to stop in during Christmas, when the distillery is covered in ornate, over-the-top decor.

Board Game Night at Books & Brews
If you’re a fan of low-key, casual date nights, you’ll love Books & Brews. It’s a hybrid board game café and craft beer spot where you can hang out, eat, and challenge each other to everything from Connect Four to Settlers of Catan. We’ve been in quite a few times and always enjoy the beer, food, and entertainment like Star Wars Triva and more.
Why it’s a fun night out:
- Great for competitive couples or those who love nostalgia
- Tons of games to choose from—both classics and obscure picks
- Their beer and sandwich menu is solid too
Don’t feel like playing one of their (many) games? No problem, grab a book and have a reading date night in a cozy, unique environment! Books & Brews also hosts themed trivia nights and other fun events, so chances are, you’ll find something both you and your partner enjoy. It’s a cozy, creative way to connect without distractions.

Rock Climbing at North Mass Boulder
Want something active and exciting? North Mass Boulder is a climbing gym that combines fitness and fun in one big indoor space. Whether you’re scaling the walls or spotting each other from the mat, it’s one of the most memorable date night ideas in Indianapolis.
Why I recommend it:
- It’s different than your typical date and super interactive
- You can challenge yourselves and support each other through it
- There’s an on-site café where you can chill out and grab a drink after climbing
It’s a unique bonding experience, and definitely a conversation starter.
Cooking Class at Sur La Table
Taking a cooking class together is one of my absolute favorite date night ideas. In fact, we did this for our anniversary at their Carmel location—we wanted to mix up date night beyond just dinner and a movie, and booking a cooking class at Sur La Table was the best idea. We did a French-themed class (which worked out perfectly because we had a trip to Paris booked the next month!), and we left with a ton of new cooking skills. Beyond that, we even got to make a flatbread that we could snack on as we were cooking the main meal.
You’ll get hands-on, and, best of all—you get to eat everything you make. Also, don’t feel nervous if you’re not the best chef. Trust me, you don’t know master chef-level cooking skills to have fun! It was laidback, exciting, and the perfect way to mix things up.
Best part:
- Choose from cuisines like Italian, Thai, French, baking, and more
- Classes often come with wine pairings
- Great gift idea or anniversary surprise

Indianapolis Attractions for Couples
Take a Stroll on the Canal Walk
There’s something about the Canal Walk that feels so peaceful and cinematic. Whether you go during golden hour or under the city lights, it’s a beautiful downtown route perfect for hand-in-hand strolls. The 3-mile loop offers waterfront views, sculptures, and cozy benches that are great for taking a pause.
Make it even better by:
- Picking up drinks from a local coffee shop or bar beforehand
- Timing it with an event at the nearby Eiteljorg Museum or Indiana State Museum
- Grabbing dinner at one of the nearby restaurants to round out the night
It’s low-key, romantic, and one of the easiest date night ideas to pull off. More specifically, it’s one of our favorite activities during the summer. And you don’t have to go in empty-handed! Make an itinerary and stop at different spots, visit museums, or rent a paddle boat, kayak, or canoe. There are so many fun ways to make Canal Walk an unforgettable date.

Indoor Trampoline Fun at SkyZone
Let loose and bounce off the stress of the week with an unexpected but seriously fun date night idea—indoor trampoline jumping at SkyZone. It’s high-energy, lighthearted, and guaranteed to make you laugh, which honestly, is what the best dates are all about. We did this back in college for a fraternity/sorority outing, and we all genuinely had a blast.
Why it’s a surprisingly great date idea:
- It breaks the ice and gets you moving
- You’ll feel like a kid again jumping around together
- They also offer glow nights and dodgeball if you’re feeling competitive
It’s the kind of unique date that’s perfect for couples who don’t take themselves too seriously. Plus, who doesn’t like sharing a little nostalgia with a loved one?
The Garage Food Hall on Mass Ave
If deciding where to eat is your biggest relationship challenge, head to The Garage Food Hall on Mass Ave. Located in the heart of the Bottleworks District, this trendy food hall is ideal for a progressive dinner date where you can try a little bit of everything. Picture: a 35,000-square-foot market featuring over 2o independent bars, restaurants, artisan shops, and local vendors. It has that nostalgic food court vibe, and it pairs perfectly with a night spend at Duckpin Bowling or Pins Mechanical!i
Here’s how to make it a night:
- Grab a drink at the wine bar, cocktail bar, or taproom
- Split appetizers from one vendor, entrees from another
- Finish with dessert from one of the sweet stalls or coffee from Blue Collar Coffee
The vibe is lively, social, and stylish—perfect for couples who like to wander and sample. If you’re looking for a recommendation, our favorite places to eat here at Clancy’s Hamburgers and Gaucho’s Fire (which is Brazilian street food). Pro tip: the Guacho Fries are a MUST-try, regardless of where you decide to dine!

Tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
If you’re looking for a date night idea that’s iconic to Indy, head to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Located right inside the famous track, it’s a must-do for locals and visitors alike.
Why it’s a winner:
- Learn about Indy’s rich racing history
- See legendary race cars up close
- Grab a drink or meal nearby at one of the local Speedway restaurants like Big Woods
It’s a fun and educational way to do something different and you don’t have to be a racing fan to appreciate the experience.

Attend a Paint & Sip Class
For a creative and lighthearted night out, a paint and sip class is a go-to choice. There are several local studios and art centers that host guided painting sessions paired with wine or cocktails, and it’s an ideal way to relax and try something new together.
Why we love it:
- No artistic skills required—it’s all about fun!
- You’ll each go home with a keepsake from the night
- Bonus: wine always helps boost your “creativity”
Check out spots like Painting with a Twist or local pop-ups around Fountain Square or Mass Ave. You can experience everything from artist-led events to at-home paint kits, making it the perfect date night for even the most inexperienced artist!
Arcade Bar in Indy
Unleash your inner kids with a retro date night at one of Indy’s arcade bars. Tappers Arcade Bar and 16-Bit Bar + Arcade are perfect spots to mix nostalgia, drinks, and a little playful competition.
If you wanna stick around Mass Ave, 16-Bit Bar + Arcade is the place to be. They have free classic arcade games, cocktails with fun names like “The Game Over” and “Flash Gordon,” and even kids mocktails if you want to make it a family affair! Why it’s a great, unique date:
- Great beer and unique cocktail menus
- Classic games like Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat
It’s casual, fun, and full of ways to show off your pinball or Dance Dance Revolution skills.

Day Date at the Indianapolis Zoo
Switch things up with a daytime date at the Indianapolis Zoo. Whether you’re animal lovers or just looking for something cute and low-key, the zoo offers a laid-back way to explore together.
Here’s what to do:
- Wander through the dolphin pavilion or the orangutan center
- Stroll the gardens or grab a bite at the café
- Plan your visit around special events or animal feedings
It’s perfect for couples who like to be outside and connect over shared curiosity and cute animals.
Escape Room
Put your teamwork to the test with a trip to one of Indy’s many escape rooms. It’s a fun, fast-paced experience that’ll have you solving puzzles, cracking clues, and laughing your way through some lighthearted pressure. For those of you who a super competitive and problem-solvers (guilty!), this is such a fun experience.
Why it makes a great date:
- Encourages collaboration and communication
- You’ll get a rush when you (hopefully) solve it
