Fun fact: I was standing inside the Evan Williams gift shop in Downtown Louisville when I decided to start my food, drink, and travel blog a few years ago. It was my first time on the bourbon trail and I fell in love. So now any time we get to travel to Louisville, it’s extra exciting. We recently partnered with The Galt House Hotel for a weekend getaway there, and it could not have been a more perfect place to stay.
The Galt House Hotel
The Galt House Hotel History
In fact, The Galt House Hotel is a Louisville icon. Originally opened in 1835, it was named after Dr. William Galt, a local physician who once owned the property. The original hotel was one of the most prestigious in the South, but after a fire in 1865 and some ups and downs through the decades, it was eventually reborn in its current location in 1972. Today, The Galt House is Kentucky’s largest hotel and the only waterfront hotel in downtown Louisville, with stunning views of the Ohio River and an unbeatable location near the city’s museum district and attractions like the KFC Yum! Center.

The Galt House Hotel Rennovation, Rooms and Amenities
The hotel recently went through an $80 million renovation, and we were so impressed with all of the updates. Upon arrival, we went on a tour of the property to see the renovations, suites, and event spaces. They have 1,310 guest rooms and suites, over 130,000 square feet of event space, 50+ meeting rooms, and even 70 residences. Our suite was incredibly spacious. It included a living area, a large bathroom, and a separate bedroom with a king-sized bed. I can totally see how their suites would be ideal for wedding groups, business travelers, or anyone looking for a luxe stay in Louisville.
The hotel also has a business center, a command center for conferences and events, and lightning-fast Wi-Fi throughout, so whether you’re traveling for work or fun, you’re covered.

The Galt House Hotel Dining and Drinks
This was the part we were most excited about—The Galt House has a seriously impressive collection of on-site dining options. I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels and have never seen this many great spots under one roof. Let’s break them down:
Conservatory Bar
We kicked off our stay with a drink at the Conservatory Bar, located on the walkway between the East and West Towers. It’s home to the longest bar in the city, and the natural light pouring through the glass ceiling gives it such a cool vibe. You get a beautiful view of the Ohio River while sipping your drink—truly the best way to ease into a weekend getaway.
They also have a Starbucks here if you’re more in the mood for a caffeine fix than a cocktail.

Jockey Silks Bourbon Bar
This place was one of our favorite stops! Jockey Silks is an original member of Louisville’s Urban Bourbon Trail, and it shows in both their selection and vibe. It has that classic bourbon bar atmosphere with just the right amount of elegance. We did a bourbon tasting and sampled a few of their rare picks. The bartenders were super knowledgeable, and it was such a fun, relaxed experience.
You can do a flight, order a pour, or even try a bourbon cocktail. And yes—there’s also food available if you want to linger a little longer. Highly recommend making time for this one. You can get more information and check out their menu here.

Swizzle
Dinner and brunch at Swizzle was the absolute highlight. Located on the 25th floor of the West Tower, Swizzle has twin revolving floors that offer panoramic 360-degree views of the Louisville skyline and the Ohio River. The view alone is worth the visit, but the food and drinks? Next level.
For dinner, I had the scallops, and my husband ordered the cowboy ribeye—both were cooked perfectly. We also tried their smoked Old Fashioned, which was brought to the table in a glass cloche and unveiled with the most amazing presentation. It was smoky, smooth, and so good.
We came back the next morning for brunch, which is served small plates style (love this concept!). Favorites included the chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, and of course, a Bloody Mary to round it all out.

Walker’s Exchange
For a more casual breakfast or lunch, Walker’s Exchange is located on the first floor and has both buffet and à la carte options. We grabbed the buffet on our way out for a day of distillery tours—it was fast, delicious, and had everything we needed to fuel up before a busy day. Definitely a solid go-to if you’re heading out early.

Things to Do Near The Galt House Hotel
The hotel can grant guests easy access to some of the best attractions in Louisville. Here are a few favorites:
Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery
Located just a short walk away, this historic distillery sits on Whiskey Row and was one of the highlights of our weekend. We were lucky enough to do a private tour and tasting, complete with a bottling experience and signed bottles by their Master Distiller. It’s in the heart of the city. But the moment you step inside, it feels like you’re transported to another time. Their bar and gift shop are also worth a visit!

Frazier History Museum
Right around the corner is the Frazier History Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian and the official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The Spirit of Kentucky exhibit is so well done and really sets the stage for the rest of your bourbon adventures. This spot is a must if you’re into local history or just want to learn more about bourbon culture.

KFC Yum! Center
If you’re in town for a concert or sporting event, the KFC Yum! Center is basically across the street. You can literally walk over from the hotel. The location really doesn’t get any better if you’re attending something here.
Louisville Museum District
You’re also within walking distance of Louisville’s museum district, where you can explore the Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Slugger Museum, and more. This area is so fun to wander around—especially when the weather is nice.
Old Forester Distillery
If you’re looking to add another stop to your bourbon itinerary, Old Forester is located right on Whiskey Row and offers a seriously cool tour. Their setup is a little more modern and polished, but still steeped in history. They even have a working cooperage where you can watch barrels being charred! It’s a great complement to places like Michter’s or Evan Williams if you want to make a full bourbon-themed day of it.
Louisville Waterfront Park
When you need a little fresh air, head out for a stroll at Waterfront Park. It’s located right along the Ohio River and just steps from the Galt House. It’s a great place to unwind with a morning coffee or catch the sunset after dinner. You’ll find walking paths, picnic spots, and public art. And if you’re visiting during the right time of year, you might even catch a festival or live concert.
Travel Tips + Final Thoughts
- Getting There: The Galt House is only about 10 minutes from the Louisville International Airport, making it super convenient whether you’re flying in for a quick weekend or road-tripping from nearby cities.
- Parking: Valet and self-parking are available, but we found it easy to get around on foot or take Ubers once we arrived.
- Business Center and Events: If you’re coming for work, the hotel’s business center and flexible event spaces make it ideal for conferences or meetings. They even have a command center for big event coordination.
- Wi-Fi: Fast and reliable Wi-Fi was available throughout the hotel and worked perfectly even in the common areas.
- Room Tip: Ask for a room in the East Tower for the best views of the Ohio River!
Overall, we had such a fantastic stay at The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky and would absolutely plan to stay here again on our future trips to Louisville. Whether you’re here for the bourbon, a special event, or just a fun weekend getaway, this hotel checks every box—and then some. With its unbeatable location, variety of on-site dining and bars, and recently refreshed interiors, The Galt House truly feels like the heart of downtown Louisville.
