If you are a first time visitor to Italy, chances are you’re planning a trip to one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, the Colosseum! I’ve had the chance to visit this must-see sight a few times during my travels, and each time it feels just as magnificent as the first. With so much to see and learn, there’s no question why the Colosseum is a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Rome.

Over 15,000 people visit the Colosseum daily, making it one of the most popular European tourist attractions. Given the crowds and the size of the Colosseum, planning ahead is essential to make the most out of your time there. Why Is The Colosseum A Good Place To Visit

The Colosseum is more than just a landmark, it’s a glimpse into the past. Having visited the Colosseum a few times now, there’s so much to discover with each visit revealing something new each time. Let’s explore the top reasons why the Colosseum is such a popular destination for travelers.

Cultural Significance

The first time I stood inside the Colosseum, I was completely blown away by how much history was packed into this place! It could hold tens of thousands of spectators who came to watch gladiator matches, hunts, and sea battles. Each time I visit, I’m reminded of how important this building was to ancient Rome and its important role in both entertainment and politics. There’s a kind of magic in knowing that so much history happened right where you’re standing.

Proximity to Other Sites

One of the best things about visiting the Colosseum is that it’s located in the heart of ancient Rome and next to other sites like the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The tickets you purchase for the Colosseum may or may not include entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill depending on where you purchased your tickets. Another site next to the Colosseum is the Arch of Constantine, which you can see without a ticket. After exploring the Colosseum, it’s typical to walk through the Roman Forum, which was once the center of Roman commerce and politics. Palatine Hill, which is just a short walk from the Colosseum and Roman Forum, is where the emperors of ancient Rome lived and offers stunning views of the Roman Forum. Visiting the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill after the Colosseum will give you a complete glimpse into ancient Rome. To get the most out of visiting the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, I would recommend a guided tour.

A Unique Experience

There’s something truly special about seeing the Colosseum in person. While pictures are stunning, nothing beats standing inside and imagining the crowds from centuries ago. You truly connect with the past as you walk around.

When Is The Best Time To Visit The Colosseum

The Colosseum is a must-see, but the timing of your visit can make a huge difference in your experience. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re wondering when is the best time to visit.

Best Time of Day To Visit The Colosseum

The best time of day to visit the Colosseum is either early in the morning or in the late afternoon, between 15 pm to close. The visiting hours for The Colosseum vary by the season but, the Colosseum opens typically at 8:30 in the morning and close in the late afternoon. To avoid the largest crowds, I recommend visiting as early as possible. Early mornings offer a quieter and more peaceful experience, especially if you’re hoping to take it all in without feeling rushed. It also is a great way to stay cool in the summer months. If you’re unable to make it to the Colosseum when it opens, I suggest going closer to the last entry times. On my most recent visit to the Colosseum, I went later in the afternoon and there were some crowds inside but it was a lot less busier than in the middle of the day. It’s pretty much always busy outside the Colosseum during the day.

Best Time of Week To Visit The Colosseum

The best time of the week to visit the Colosseum is early weekdays. There will still be crowds but it could potentially be a little more manageable than the weekend.

Best Time of the Year to Visit The Colosseum

The best time of the year to visit the Colosseum is in the spring or fall. During these months, the weather is mild and the crowds are more manageable compared to summer, which is peak tourist season in Rome. Spring and Fall have the perfect balance of weather and fewer tourists. Summer is usually hot and crowded, especially in July and August, so avoid visiting during this time if possible.

How To Get Tickets To The Colosseum

Now, let’s talk about how to get tickets to the Colosseum. With so many people visiting the Colosseum each day, it’s absolutely essential to plan ahead!

Book Your Tickets in Advance

To enter the Colosseum, you must purchase tickets ahead of time. The most affordable tickets to the Colosseum can be purchased directly from the official Colosseum website. It is essential to plan ahead because these specific tickets are released 30 days before the entrance time and these are difficult to get because they sell out almost immediately. Besides buying your tickets directly, there are many tour companies where you can get your Colosseum tickets that may include a guided or audio experience of some sort.

Types of Tickets

There are several types of tickets available for purchase through the official Colosseum website. The ticket options with no guide include:

  • Full Experience Ticket With Entry To The Arena of the Colosseum
  • 24 Hour Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
  • Full Experience – Underground Levels and Arena (The most popular ticket)
  • Full Experience Ticket With Entry To The Attic of the Colosseum (Only ticket with Attic access)
  • 24 Hour Only Arena
  • Forum Pass Super (No Entry to Colosseum – Only Roman Forum and Palatine Hill)

A fair warning that there’s not much context provided for the areas so if it’s your first time to the Colosseum Roman Forum. The first time I went I opted for an audio guide, which gave some really cool insight on what was what. The second time I visited I was fitting it into an already packed schedule so I went with a standard entry ticket with no guide whatsoever. If you are just wanting to see the Colosseum this should be fine, but if you are wanting all the insights on the history of each part then I would recommend booking a guided experience.

If you are looking for a complete glimpse into ancient Rome, I recommend this Premium Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill. It’s done in smaller groups and has a couple different time options throughout the day.

No matter which type of ticket you choose, do plan to spend a little time waiting in line.

How To Get To The Colosseum

The Colosseum is located in the heart of Rome, making it super accessible from other popular tourist spots. Here are a few ways to get to it.

Walking

If you’re staying in central Rome, it’s a pretty easy walk to the Colosseum. On my most recent trip to Rome, we stayed next to the Trevi Fountain and it was a scenic 20-minute walk.

By Metro

If you’re not staying in central Rome, the Metro is the easiest way to get to the Colosseum since it has its own station next to it. All you need to do is take the B line and get off at the Colosseo stop. The metro station is located next to the Colosseum and is a quick walk to the entrance.

By Bus

The Colosseum is accessible by bus if you are staying outside of central Rome and is only about a 15 minute ride from Roma Termini. The bus stop for the Colosseum is at pIazza del Colosseo, only a short walk to the entrance.

What Are The Rules For Visiting The Colosseum?

There are a few rules to keep in mind when visiting the Colosseum.

What Type of Bags Are Allowed In The Colosseum?

There are no large bags, backpacks or luggage allowed inside the Colosseum. There are storage facilities for baggage nearby where you can leave your belongings for a fee while you explore. Small and medium sized bags are allowed at the Colosseum so I typically carry a cross body bag for my belongings.

What Is The Dress Code At The Colosseum?

There isn’t an official dress code at the Colosseum, but you will be doing plenty of walking. I recommend wearing an athletic shoe and comfortable clothing. If you are visiting in the warmer months expect direct sun the entire time so don’t forget sunscreen.

Visiting the Colosseum is one of those experiences that stays with you for a lifetime. By planning ahead, booking your tickets in advance, and knowing what to expect, you can ensure your visit is enjoyable and unforgettable. Whether you’re only visiting the Colosseum or also seeing the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in your visit, there’s so much to experience.
