My Step-By-Step Guide on How to Plan a Honeymoon

Whether you’re thinking months in advance or just now beginning your planning process, a few steps can simplify the journey. Here are the essential steps for putting together your ideal honeymoon travel plan:

Step 1: Start planning early.

The earlier you start planning, the better–trust me on this one. Booking months in advance can help you save money and give you a wider range of options for flights, accommodations, and experiences. Popular honeymoon destinations can get booked up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. So, once your wedding date is set, start brainstorming your travel plans to secure the best deals and availability.

Step 2: Set your honeymoon budget.

Before diving into the honeymoon details, establish a realistic honeymoon budget. Knowing your budget will help narrow down destinations and activities that are within reach. Factor in all expected expenses, from flights and accommodations to meals, activities, and any splurges. Being clear on your budget will make decision-making much smoother.

Step 3: Consider a honeymoon registry.

A honeymoon registry can be a wonderful way to add to your travel funds and make the trip of your dreams possible. Friends and family can contribute to your experiences, such as a romantic dinner, a couples’ massage, or a guided tour. This way, guests can be part of your travel memories while easing some of the honeymoon costs. We added one of these to our wedding website, and we ended up receiving multiple excursions for our trip including a sunset sail!

Step 4: Choose your honeymoon destination.

Deciding on a honeymoon destination is one of the biggest steps. Whether you’re drawn to a tropical island, a bustling city, or a serene mountain retreat, your options are endless!

Consider what activities you and your partner enjoy adventure, relaxation, cultural exploration, or a mix. To make the process easier, create a honeymoon bucket list and narrow it down by prioritizing what excites both of you. You should also take into consideration the length of your trip. You can find TONS of inspiration in the travel section of my blog. Then, you can also use my favorite travel site, Booking.com, to search for and book your accommodations.

We ended up going to UNICO Riviera Maya in Mexico for our honeymoon and it was the best decision ever! Some other great places we have been together that would make great honeymoon destinations are Italy, Paris, Costa Rica, and other countries all across Europe if you are interested in a longer trip.

Step 5: Research seasonal considerations.

Seasons can greatly affect your honeymoon experience. Some places may offer perfect weather for sightseeing, while others have rainy or hurricane seasons to consider. Research weather trends for your chosen destination and any local events or festivals that might cause higher prices or limited availability. Planning around these factors will help ensure you enjoy the best of your dream destination.

Step 6: Decide on a travel plan.

Once you have your destination, create a loose travel plan. Decide how many days you want to spend at each spot and how you’ll get around. If you’re planning a multi-stop honeymoon, be sure to allow enough time to fully enjoy each location. I love booking tours and experiences on Viator. With a click of a button, you can hop on tours led by experts and meet new people during your travels!

But remember–the honeymoon is all about relaxing together, so don’t overbook your itinerary!

Step 7: Make the most of your credit card perks.

If you have a travel-friendly credit card, now is the perfect time to take advantage of its perks. Many cards offer rewards, discounts, or even travel insurance that can help save money and add special touches to your honeymoon. Look into your card’s benefits, such as lounge access, concierge services, and travel credits, which can enhance your travel experience without additional costs.

Step 8: Work with travel agents (optional).

For couples looking to simplify the planning process, working with a travel agent can be a great option. Travel agents can help with every detail, from finding great deals to coordinating transportation and excursions. Plus, they often have access to exclusive offers and can customize a perfect honeymoon package tailored to your tastes.

Step 9: Prepare a packing list.

Packing for a honeymoon can be both super exciting and a bit challenging. Consider making a honeymoon-specific packing list with essentials for the weather, activities, and any special plans you have. For inspiration, check out this packing list for Europe if your destination is overseas. Also, remember that many credit cards offer lost luggage protection, so bring your travel card with you as an extra precaution.

How to Choose a Honeymoon Destination

Consider the time of year.

Some destinations are best during certain times of the year. Take Costa Rica, for example–the best time of year to go visit is from December to April. Consider what time of year you would like to go on your honeymoon to help you narrow down destination choices. We had originally been planning on Costa Rica for our October honeymoon, but ultimately ended up heading to Mexico which had the perfect weather during that time. We ended up going to Costa Rica at a later date in February and it was a fantastic time to visit!

Look for honeymoon packages.

If you’re working within a stricter budget, then you may want to find honeymoon packages at all-inclusive resorts. Discovering great travel deals can definitely help you decide where you would like to go for your honeymoon. We ended up doing our first all-inclusive for our honeymoon (and a few others since then!) and they are definitely the way to go if you want to relax and enjoy all the amenities.

Think about what you like to do.

The most important thing to consider when choosing a honeymoon destination is what you and your partner like to do while on vacation. Are you beach or mountain people? Do you want to relax all day or go on adventures? Create a list of things you picture doing on your honeymoon. Then, you can narrow down destinations where you can do them!

Plan unique experiences.

Think about destinations that offer unique, memorable experiences, whether it’s an adventure activity, local cuisine, or a cultural tradition. The honeymoon is a special time, so lean toward destinations that promise once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Consider travel time.

The length of your honeymoon trip can also determine where you decide to go. For example, if you only want to go for a week, then going somewhere that requires a 12-hour flight may not be the best option. Instead, look at destinations closer to home. But if you are going for a couple of weeks, then a long travel day (or days) won’t cut into too much of your honeymoon.

Start planning the perfect honeymoon and make forever memories with your new spouse!

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to planning the perfect honeymoon that reflects your personalities and sets the tone for your new life together. Start planning early, consider every detail, and focus on creating experiences you’ll treasure forever. Here’s to the beginning of your best adventure yet!
